Nardia, a beautiful fallen angel with extraordinary healing powers, must use all of her strength to help save two special children from being taken in by an evil demon. This is no ordinary demon; this one has the power to inflict illness and death upon people, and is set on hurting all those who Nardia cares about in order to get these children into his possession.
This battle for life amongst angels and demons is played out in a most believable and understandable way, which is an absolute credit to the author, Aria Williams, as she plays on real human emotions and struggles with the conscience.
In addition to facing this fierce demon, Nardia must also come to terms with her feeling for the two men in her life. One the one hand, she has a loyal, trusting relationship with her doting Doctor Reagan. On the other, she has a primal, lusting attraction for her angel soul mate AJ. Her feelings for both men, with the added stress of her demon pursuit, send Nardia into intense internal turmoil, and we get to know her very well.
The relationship between Nardia and AJ is central to “Pretender”, and on more than one occasion their intense feelings for each other result in steamy, intimate love scenes. These interactions are expertly described by Williams. She finds the perfect balance of raunchy sexuality, while still remaining appropriate for the Young Adult audience.
‘Pretender’ is a story that is very hard to put down, with its wonderful cast of wholesome characters, exciting plot sequence, and a writing style that appeals to many audience groups.
Throughout the book there are many twists and turns. Nardia has to deal with her feelings that she has for two different men - AJ and Dr Regan. AJ's love for Nardia has never faltered and Dr Regan is the comfortable normal that Nardia needs. Both men tug at her heart strings leaving Nardia battling with her own feelings and desires for them both.
"No, Nardia, you read this right. I love you more than anyone, but I can't be with you until it's over between you and Regan. I can't be the other man" - AJ
All the while dealing with an evil demon who is out to get Nardia and making those she cares about suffer too, including 2 special children that she has become quite fond of. Nardia and AJ lean towards their angel frinds to help with this mess.
" By the time I had finished, tears covered my face, as nature's morphine flowed freely. I came to terms that this world was not only home to angels, but to demons as well. And one of them was out to get me. I was so scarred." - Nardia
I was pleasantly surprised when reading this to find some tasteful spice in this book. Aria has added a touch of sensuality that highlights the emotion and sexual tensions between Nardia and AJ.
This book was another great read and I look forward to reading the next instalment in this series.
