Soren must put his personal torments aside and embrace new and frightening skills if he’s to have a chance of helping her. Meanwhile Sara herself has grown in her role and capabilities, now working for a secret outfit that investigates and opposes malign supernatural incursions.
But that may not be enough to fight a more dangerous enemy than any they’ve yet faced, and who has gathered an army of supernatural monstrosities to his call.
The series invites comparisons with the legendary Buffy and Angel series, with its blend of supernatural action, horror and touches of humor. It’s a tricky mix to pull off, but Blackwell succeeds, creating a story and characters you want to follow.
And the ending…it leaves no doubt there are much bigger challenges in store for Soren Chase and company.
Now that that’s out of the way…
I really loved the first Soren Chase novel and was very excited to get the Amazon email showing the sequel was being released soon. Not wanting to wait, I checked NetGalley and was able to get an uncorrected proof copy (yea!)
Like “Forest”, “Pretender” is much more intense and horror-ish (?) than my usual preference. But once again Blackwell’s writing and the Soren Chase character completely drew me in. The story also provided more character development for returning characters as well as an intriguing new one, Friday. Since OF COURSE you’ve already read “Forest” (:-)) you know to expect a lot of paranormal violence and this time there is also a (not too graphic) sex scene.
I didn’t love this quite as much as the first because, falling solidly in the urban fantasy/horror genre, it didn’t have the original’s noir mystery feel which was part of what I loved. In addition there are several long, detailed fight scenes that became a little tedious. But this is an important book in the Soren Chase mythos and since the proof copy had numerous distracting formatting errors, I went ahead and pre-ordered the final kindle version. Really, if the two Soren Chase novels were available in hardbound I would buy those too for my “keep permanently” bookshelves. (ETA- I received my actual kindle version and of course the formatting is just fine. Now I just need those hardbound...))
(Did I mention that you should read Forest of Forever first?)
The Pretender is very fast paced and kept my interest throughout. Star Wars fans will enjoy a Yoda/Luke type training sequence in the story. I really like the new villain that's introduced, Rakev. The Pretender has a lot of action and some very cool, unique monsters. Also the story dives into the character of Soren Chase a lot deeper and shows just how complex he is.
If you're a fan of sci-fi/monster novels with a great story and a really interesting main character then give "The Pretender" a look. You won't be disappointed
