Kate, the Aussie girl, sporting a wicked broken heart flees to Dubai to be with her best friend. Niamh, the funny wise-cracking best friend is full of support and advice.
“Look at it this way, you have a do-over, a place to begin again. Be who you want to be, do what, or who you want to do”.
Although Kate appreciates the support she has sworn off men for the time being. Her plan is to work, heal, and enjoy this beautiful country she is in. Having never left Australia, except for the vacation or two, she wants to enjoy her time away from everything. From the cheater.
Kai, the devilishly handsome local with eyes that smolder and abs that make one swoon. Handsome. Rich. Playboy. All the things that make a bad boy look so good. He always gets what he wants and won’t stop until he gets it. A chance encounter that includes a fall from a ladder leaves Kate falling right into Kai’s arms and on his radar from that point on. He has to have her. He needs to have her.
Kate and Kai find a passion so hot it could light the bedsheets aflame. His mere tough has Kate’s iron will to swear off men crumbling more with each encounter. Kai takes her over the edge in more ways than she could ever imagine. She becomes a different person with him. A more emboldened Kate and she kind of loves it. Can she just keep it casual? What exactly are they doing together? Does Kai just have eyes for Kate? What does he want from her?
This story had a slow start. However, the background story was completely necessary for the plot line. Once the story picked up it was a complete page turner. It had me on the edge of my seat as I was reading with the lewdest internal dialogue going along in my head. The book ended in a major cliffhanger which made me grateful it is part of a trilogy. It definitely left me wanting, no needing more. I will note that some of the cultural references or “slang” terms I didn’t understand; however, I was able to understand the gist of what was said. Overall, artfully written and intensely descriptive in all the best ways.
>I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st in the Pretty Trilogy and ends in a cliffhanger. Kate is an Aussie whose fiancé cheated on her, breaking her heart. She moves to Dubai, where she has a friend, and gets a teaching job. Dubai is a setting I have never been exposed to. For all of the ultra-conservative rules, there seems to be a lot of double standards and debauchery. The story line between Kate and the handsome Kai is fairly typical, with an Arab twist, but the setting makes the book suspenseful. Danger from breaking the rules or tradition lurk around every corner.
>Kai seems to be some kind of a man whore. He sees Kate and pursues her relentlessly. His ideas about marriage and relationships are so out of line with Kate’s that I cannot see how these two could get any kind of HEA. Kai is all about BDSM and Kate is very vanilla. The Aussie phrasings are interesting, as both the reader and Kai, have a hard time figuring out what she is saying. The secondary characters are both unique and scary. Kai’s ex, Sophia and his cousin seem to give off a dangerous vibe. Kate’s friend warns her against a relationship with Kai. Apparently rich Arab’s set up women as mistresses, but will never marry them.
>Kate is too busy fighting her own feelings regarding her introduction into BDSM to really see where the relationship is going. Kai only refers to Kate as a friend. The culture adds to the mystery, as multiple and temporary marriages seem to be allowed. The vast difference in classes is noticed, as well. There is opulent wealth or abject poverty. Women seem to be considered as lesser than men.
>This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving the book 4 stars. The setting and culture make this story so unique. I hope that Kate will learn to get her point across more clearly in future books. In this book she either stares a lot, stutters or mumbles.
Who gave this novel all these 4 and 5 stars?
The writing was all over the place; not making any sense what so ever, the characters were flimsy and flat with no personality or realness. The story line itself was weak and boring. The love scenes reminded me of teenagers losing their virginity for the first time; awkward and weird. The random taste of BDSM thrown into the story was pointless. I'm pretty sure the author has no idea what BDSM is and has no experience with it. The fact that the heroine reacted to the incident like domestic violence and not sexually dominance was insulting. The damn girl really cried and threw a fit because "he hit me on the bum and I liked it".
