Editorial Reviews

Wow. Just... WOW. This was a completely different book, in a great way. This book, as the title suggests, brings the heat. It is also one of the funniest books I have read in a long time. The humor can be off color but man, oh man, is it delivered with a one two punch guaranteed to keep you giggling. Be warned, if you read this book in public you will end up looking like a two year old squirming in their seat, and laughing like a loon at the antics. I can't wait for more!

Pretty Hot. Pretty Amazing. Pretty Funny. Pretty Sexy. Pretty heroine. Sexy hero. Pretty amazing secondary characters. Pretty Amazing story line. These are the feelings that come into my mind when I went into this book. Every touch, every smile was quite addicting. I kept reading and reading to know more. The story line is quite refreshing. The world that the author painted for us was breathtaking. It felt like I was there the whole time. I would highly recommend this book and can't wait to read the next. Thank you for this amazing book, Donna!

This was so much more than I'd bargained for, excellent writing, great plot, hot dominant alpha male. But what I really found a breath of fresh air was the comedic value. Think Alice Clayton or Tara Sivec style. Then there were chapters that were so sensual and hot as hell that I found myself speed reading. I was extremely invested. In conclusion this was a fabulous debut novel filled with sexy times, humour and angst. Highly recommended.

About the Author

Donna writes about exotic locations and the men you aren't married to, but wish you were. Escapism reads with heart and humour, and of course, plenty of steam. Hailing from the North of England, Donna is a nomad at heart, moving houses and continents more times than she cares to recall. She once worked at a school like the one described in Pretty Hot. Alas, there were no handsome male protagonists hanging around there.

Like relationships, this book starts out slow. Unfortunately, it's really slow, a bit drab and really hard to pay attention. Sort-of like an okay looking guy talking to you in a space where your focus is on anyone but him. You want him to finish his sentence, so you can excuse yourself and move on. The words on the pages finally begin to make sense about 25 pages in, so keep reading. It's the boring background bits & pieces, but necessary to this story.
With the background established, the hot and heavy pulses and wow, just WOW! Kai is smoking hot, a woman's best guilty pleasure and right up there with chocolate. He melts her and you rightfully squirm following his tongue, er lips, I mean the storyline. It's masterfully delicious and details are all there. I couldn't help but to keep reading. The toe curling, panting breaths and blush red cheeks are fictional here but realistic. The young, wealthy bachelor with drool inducing looks is fantasy but his moves and her mewling seem possible anytime.

The ending is a cliffhanger, but I've purchased it and the final of this trilogy already. I deducted one star for the cliffhanger ending. Stinks when authors do that. Looking forward to more sleepless nights of the best kind!

Katie flees her Australian home in the wake of a bad breakup. Having a friend in Dubai makes it an easy choice for her to get a job teaching and relocate there. Katie's friend Niamh, who is Irish, is hilarious and just what Katie needs to recover from her heartbreak.

Kai is from an affluent traditional Arab family. He is gorgeous, smart and wealthy. Everything Katie's new friends tell her to stay away from. Well, we all know how that works out.

I truly enjoyed this read. Katie's inner dialogue is entertaining. She and Niamh's conversations made me laugh out loud. Katie and Kai are just plain hot together, guess that is where the title came from.

The writing is well done and easily draws you into the story. I liked the location as it is new for me and I like learning about new places. This is the first in a trilogy and ends in a bit of a cliffy. All three books are out so no worries on having to wait.

Favorite Quotes:

“Heifer? I’ve seen more fat on the pencil my mammy’s butcher uses.”

“Time seems to take on that slow-mo T.V. effect as his head rises, the sun beaming through the tall windows and cresting his head. All that’s missing is the sound of a celestial choir as he looks directly at me, his eyes warmly reflecting recognition, and – I can’t help it – I beam back like a schoolgirl of the very gauche kind.”

“Well, I’m not saying she puts it about, but her favorite shade of lipstick is penis, if you know what I mean.”

“He was seriously uninterested. In fact, I think his answer was something like ‘if he’d a back full of willies, he wouldn’t give her one.’”

“I’m so out of my depths, I’m probably risking the bends.”

“He’s not bad looking. Shame his pal has a head like a half chewed toffee.”

My Review:

Pretty Hot was aptly titled. It was smokin’ hot with an extra side of steamy. I reveled in the irreverent and clever humor of this fish out of water story. An Aussie girl and her Irish friend living and working in Dubai of all places! The clash of cultures was interesting and a bit sticky, and at times, rather icky… but I really try not to judge. I adored this delightful story and it was all fun, games, and new experiences until – damn – he broke her heart… which squeezed mine. But hold on and swoon, he frequently quotes Shakespeare to her - so of course she forgives him. The storyline is entertaining, unique, and enthralling. The writing is crisp, humorous, and full of amusing observations. But oh no – a heinous cliffhanger. Arg! I am foaming at the mouth…

After she catches her fiancé cheating on her, Australian Kate decides to upend her entire life and move to Dubai. She’s a teacher and Dubai apparently has lots of private schools, so finding a job is no problem. And her best friend already lives there (she’s a teacher too), so she has a jump start on a social life. That jump start, however, becomes unnecessary when she meets Kai, a handsome and mysterious stranger at her school.

With characters from all over the world, this was a truly multi-cultural romance. The setting has a feel of authenticity that convinces me that the author either has firsthand experience with the Dubai expatriate experience or is really good at research. Unlike the contrived conflicts set up in some romances, the conflict between Kate and Kai feels authentic. It is based on the profound differences in their culture and personalities. Alum isn’t afraid of the darker side of lust. There are some genuinely funny moments in this novel, but when she turns on the heat . . . it gets turned on. It’s powerful. I was surprised to find out that this was her first novel. I may not always like these characters, but I understand how they are drawn to each other. And that’s the most important part of a romance novel to me.

It does feel slow at the beginning, but the plot picks up speed towards the end of the book. It ends with a cliffhanger, but it doesn’t feel out-of-nowhere.
