Editorial Reviews

Hole's debut album originally released by Caroline in 1991 was produced by Kim Gordon and Gumball front man Don Fleming. Pretty On The Inside was named album of the year by The Village Voice and the only single released, Teenage Whore, entered the UK indie charts at number one. Graphic lyrics, distorted guitar riffs, screaming vocals, and messy punk ethics helped the album sell over 600,000 copies worldwide and established Courtney Love's long running cult status. On 180 gram vinyl.

Strangly enough Pretty on the Inside has always been my favorite album of Holes. I love and know all the words to Live Through This but Pretty On the Inside is more wild, less commercial, it has more raw beauty and Courtney holds nothing back. This is the album that helped get me through my high school years also. There are more hidden jewels in Pretty on the Inside and the lyrics are wonderful. On Live Through This the songs were more individual and controlled but Pretty on the Inside is one wild, fantastic, beautiful mess. If you liked Celebrity Skin you may not like this album but you should at least give it a try.

Considering the fact that 've been a fan of Hole since I was maybe..mmm,circa 1996(my sister puchased LTT a little later than release date)and being I was only 6 at the time,I fell in LOVE with the album. My first taste was Violet,I thought it was a great song and I sang the chorus at school(not the smartest idea in catholic school)but back to POTI.This is by far ranked as a creative masterpiece I say. With the gritty anthem to girls who lived life as prostitutes,Teenage Whore is your savior.Courtney then goes into thrashing Kat Bjelland for taking authorship of Courtney's 'kinder-whore' look in the song 'BabyDoll' as the album progresses, you WON'T get bored. It's a punk rock gem, with the slef titled song,it's a prophetic song about how the ugly girls get the anthem of inner beauty. It wraps up with a cover of Joni Mitchell's 'Clouds' which is simply breathtaking.Courtney's vocals are unlike anyone elses, and I definatly give her 10 stars for being a poetic genius and for being the symbol of female sexuality as not just mens toys.No Madonna here! Courtney is crowned "Miss World"

Oh my god. This is about my favorite album of all time, along with American Thighs by Veruca Salt, Nevermind by Nirvana, and England by the Sex Pistols. The lyrics are incredibly raw and you're sucked in by "Garbage Man." Seriously, if you do not own this, you should. This was a pivotal moment for feminist punk-rockers everywhere. I love Hole to death, and Pretty on the Inside is my favorite of their albums, though I like Live Through This as well. On Celebrity Skin, they were all caught up in ego and fame, not to mention MTV airwaves. I blame Celebrity Skin for Hole's breakup, because they could not have attempted any harder to sell out. When you go that mainstream, there's nowhere to go but the downward spiral. Back in the day when Pretty on the Inside was released, they were just up there, and it was all about the music. Pretty on the Inside is a perfect combination of grunge, punk, and tell it like it is, raw to the bone, slap in the face lyrics. It should be a crime for anyone to not own this album, it was a truly pivotal moment for women in rock everywhere.

KURT COBAIN LIVES ON!

Courtney Love... you rock, thank you for making my day a full ten times better

When I first got this, I was incredibly disappointed and angry that I'd wasted my $13.99. Upon my second and third listenigs, however, I became hooked. It's definitely an album that grows on you and takes some getting used to, or at least it was like that for me. There's just something eerily beautiful about Courtney's wails that makes you want to keep coming back for more. I realize some people loathe this; I think it's one of those albums you either love or hate. It's honest, in your face, and it doesn't try to be anything. No pretense, no censorship. Just anger, rage, saddness, put into music. There is melody here, though it's not immediately apparent the first time you listen to it. It's kind of unintentionally genius. Anyone who's ever been justifiably angry can relate to this. Courtney takes phrases and infuses them with as much emotion and meaning as they could ever have with her screams. I recommend that everyone at least try this out. There's a chance you'll hate it, but then you could love it as much as me. It's infinitely sad that Hole decided to take what they had here and slowly emasculate it until it became the dreck that is Celebrity Skin.

Heavy, raw and open; this CD really blows away any of the so called "Riot Grrls." A lot of kids want "Punk Rock" but they want it as a suburban commodity, nice and pretty and clean. These songs are angry, pissed off, dirty and ooze with female bombast. This is a classic CD and when the smoke clears, you will see that this is grungier and nastier than Nirvana or other so called grunge bands.

Abrasive but yet not as alienating as expected & very much reminiscent of Patti Smith, completely the opposite of what one might expect looking only a frontwoman Courtney Love's wild woman reputation, are the first thoughts that come to mind listening to this album. I'll confess I never heard Hole's debut until I decided to listen to it to potentially review. While her later albums are more user friendly, abrasive but in a more polished & musically diverse & generally get higher critical reviews I never found them that interesting. I'd put off listening to this as I didn't want to hear more of Hole. I found the later albums punchy & angry for the sake of it with no real internal venom that wasn't being forced out of the musical toothpaste tube. I'd heard similar music done by other bands with far greater skill. I expected to enjoy this much less & not even review it. How shocked I was. I greatly enjoyed this album & its certainly changed my view of the band. Love is so wrapped up in the mystique surrounding her late spouse, the iconic Kurt Cobain, it's easy to forget that Hole, co-founded with guitarist Erlandson, debuted before meeting Cobain. It's also easy to forget that Cobain didn't make Love an angry uncompromising controversial woman, often called slut, manic, troubled ... she was always like this. Hole's debut is witness. Actually, being a former stripper trying to form a band might have made her a bit angrier than later being the all-star wife of an international star, let alone mother. Here the inner demon comes out in more than just anger, but poetry & art that I don't feel the later albums have. Actually, members of the band have said they felt the later music was often fake. This is a East Village album but recorded in Hollywood in so many ways.Read more ›
