Pretty wicked will make you ask that question immensely. We’ve all read a book about people being murdered or hunted, but never really from the murders point of view. I was immediately intrigued when I found out that’s how this book was written. For the most part, it’s coming from our MC point of view, Ryann, 15-year-old aspiring serial killer. This book will have you hooked from the first page. You’ll want to keep turning pages as Ryann pulls off the most lavish murders her small town has ever seen. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know how it would end! Being the first book of the series, it definitely leaves you wanting more and more. It had me questioning the nature of being born evil or simply becoming evil, but not from the expense of a hard life. She carefully chose who she would bring down. She started off like any murderer; cautious and careful. After things started getting hectic, she started slipping. Will she get away with being a 15-year-old serial killer? You’ll have to find out for yourself on September 30th!
Overall, it was a fantastic book and I would recommend it to anyone! I cannot wait until the second book, Wicked Fallout.

Either way, back to the story. Ryann is fifteen years old, and she wants to commit a murder. More than wanting to, she actually goes ahead with it. This starts a game of cat and mouse between Ryann and her father, a police detective, and the rest of the police squad. But Ryann has spent most her life studying from the Greats, so she knows how to cover up her tracks, and how to make it difficult for the police to catch her.
This is an unique plot, and the story worked well. Ryann is a believable character, despite her many, many flaws, and I could even understand why she acted the way she did – I would never condone murder, of course, but Ryann didn’t do it out of the blue. She’s an incredibly intriguing protagonist, the kind that haunts you longer after you finished reading. For someone so far removed from what society considers “normal”, it’s creepy how relatable Ryann is.
She did make some fatal flaws, and errors that made her look amateurish – but what can you expect from a fifteen-year-old? I also liked her diverse cast of friends. Interesting to read a slasher book from the POV of the killer.
If you enjoyed a thrilling, creepy YA thriller, I recommend Pretty Wicked. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
"There’s a distinct difference between a kill of opportunity and a planned murder."
Ryann -our lovely sweet little girl of a heroine- is a sociopath, psychotic, crazy. If there's a word for it, it's probably Ryann and she's one hell of an actor to have all of her friends fooled. With her obsession of serial killers and her black humor, I felt a little crazy myself reading this. I was rooting for her and laughing right along beside her.
“That gives me the creeps. Stop it.” Oh, feigning innocence and fear. Good times.
Poor Ryann, she stressed me out. With all the killing, lies, and mistakes she made.. I didn't know which way was up. I just KNEW that she was going to get caught any second. My heart was racing, I was turning pages as fast I could read. I was almost tempted to turn to the back and read what happens. I just wanted to know!
I felt sorry for her too. Always trying to be the best daughter she can be and outshine her sister. She just wants to be recognized. A pat on the back...an atta' girl.. anything! But she's never good enough. It's quite obvious being in her head that she needs major help.
There are several other "suspects" thrown into play and her COP of a dad and his partner hot on her heels. Just how far is Ryann willing to go? She's hurting people left and right, slipping up and getting sloppy. Who's going to be the one to bring her down? And is someone watching?
Pretty Wicked was the perfect YA/mature dark read. The high school setting was perfect and not TOO YA with the gritty killings and Ryann's dark thoughts. I cannot wait for book two.
