Likeable stone-monster hero, strong type of heroine reminiscent of Lara Croft (Tomb Raider); believably sleazy world.
Humor keeps the story from being horror-class, too negative, or too dark.
Rules are fair, if inevitably paid off via sex.
Good imagination with varied alien species, and their, ahem...attributes.
Well written graphic sex scenes that cater to size-play. And monster-play (def NOT cos-play/furry/anthro).
'Soft' domination, and a hint of submission, but NOT for the BDSM crowd. Like comparing Kool-Aid to Vodka :-D.
No disrespect of females per se, if you discount the lecherous denizens with exhibitionist tendencies.
No harming of critters. No substance use. No adultery/infidelity.
Story wise, there's just enough character building to have an opinion about the 2 main players and Ledderick the cyborg.
This is OK for erotica, IMO, but puts it on a level beneath masters like Grace Goodwin (Interstellar Brides SF romances), and Evangeline Anderson (Kindred Tales SF Warrior Romances)... recommend readers check those out if gripping stories with female-affirming, panty-melting sex are what you want.
Their HEA is temporary, which is sad, after coming to like the stoneshifter and Mila. The couple will perish from the Osirii parasite that destroys the Self, being lost after just 100 years - the Hero gives up his immortality to buy the Heroine more time, so it's bittersweet. Tragic enough for a Japanese film!
Why I gave it a '4' not a '5':
I was disappointed by the ending.
Unless there's a sequel to redeem them and the unborn little stoneshifter, it's not satisfying as a romance...we need those HEAs!
I read to feel better, not tragic ... like a dog-sprayed-by-a-skunk sort of tragic.
For the sex-with-monsters fans... some non-human options.
Ruby Dixon's ' Iceplanet Barbarians' romances may appeal to you if you enjoyed this. Hers are fast-moving, fun, and set in a very alien world, with many interesting characters and romantic/hot connections. I call these 'light reading'. The males are humanoid blue lion-people. Augmented by a third symbiotic species....:-D
Newer author, Amanda Milo (Stolen By An Alien series) may appeal to those looking for more complex, well-planned alien world setting (several clearly defined, unusual species) and sex scenes with realistic emotional repercussions. 'Dark' story fans may especially like book 2 which deals with trauma recovery and messy psychological reactions. These stories are 'Deeper reading'. The males are humanoid-avian-predator, raptor dinosaur-snake-humanoid, and dragon-humanoid.
If you like unusual sci-fi or paranormal that has a dirty edge to it but isn’t serial-killer or Saw dark, give this book a shot. You won’t be disappointed. This world is new to me, and I think it’s going to be a series (hopefully). Several characters could easily carry their own book—like Zarblu’s murderous cyborg fixer, Ledderik. That story could be even better.
I appreciate an ending that I couldn't have thought up on my own.
I look forward to the next book, Steel.
Cari Silverwood has outdone herself! This book is so unique I don't even know how to begin to describe it. A stoneshifter and a tomb raider/thief as the main characters, huge d***s EVERYWHERE, cat-and-mouse games around every corner, machinations worthy of the very best spy novels that exist. Wow! This book is absolutely irresistible! There's nothing not to love about this story. But the very best thing, for me, was Cari Silverwood's over-the-top, dark sense of humor that grabbed me from page one. You read that right. Over-the-top, dark sense of humor! I laughed out loud just as much as I shuddered at times. I loved Mila's snarkiness and outright disrespect even in the face of the most dire circumstances. Zarblu's the most unlikely villain I've ever encountered in any book. And Led? OMG! Talk about comic relief and counterpoint to Zarblu! He's amazing, and I loved him! (And, no, I'm not telling you who or what Led is! You'll just have to read the book.) Cari Silverwood has again struck the perfect balance of darkness, hot steaminess, and outrageous over-the-top fun. Congratulations, Ms. Silverwood! I adored this book! It deserves nothing less than five stars!
A final note. This is an ADULT book. It contains explicit language, a small bit of darkness, and sexual scenes. If you don't enjoy this genre, this may not be the book for you. There are book synopses and reviews available on Goodreads and Amazon. Use these resources. DON'T LEAVE A NEGATIVE REVIEW WHEN YOU KNOW YOU WON'T ENJOY THE BOOK. It's not fair to the author. She works hard to provide a quality work product. If you know you'll object to a book's subject matter before you buy it, you're doing yourself and the author an extreme disservice.
Thanks for reading my review and happy reading!

This book is a total hoot from start to finish - the 'hero' Zarblu is a stoneshifter, the heroine Mila (human and a mercenary) into anything bad, a psycho cyborg, a talking sword, a faithless sister and some lovely send-up moments all packed into this superb novella. So let yourself get captured and enjoy!
Mila is a warrior who needs to save her sister Tiana from being sacrificed to a stoneshifter. Lord Zarblu decides he wants Mila to be his sacrifice instead of Tiana and with the help of his cyborg Ledderik he captures her.
No more spoilers from me but if your looking for a quick (more light grey than dark) with a side of humour read, this is for you.
I hope Ledderik gets his own story, a sexually frustrated cyborg! He definitely needs a female touch 😀
