About the author

Growing up in Minneapolis and attending the U of MN, I learned to love city life, although I'm a woodsy girl at heart. Or maybe I'm an adventurer -- having lived and traveled all over the world, including Siberia Russia as a missionary for eight years. Probably that's why my characters can't sit still, and seem to get into one scrape after another -- they're too much like me! I love God, my family, my country, my church, and feel privileged every day to be able to write stories.
Here's my "Official" Bio.
With over 1 million books sold, critically acclaimed novelist Susan May Warren is the Christy, RITA and Carol award-winning author of over seventy-five novels with Revell, Tyndale, Barbour, Steeple Hill and Summerside Press. Known for her compelling plots and unforgettable characters, Susan has written contemporary and historical romances, romantic-suspense, thrillers, rom-com and Christmas novellas.
With books translated into eight languages, many of her novels have been ECPA and CBA bestsellers, were chosen as Top Picks by Romantic Times, and have won the RWA's Inspirational Reader's Choice contest and the American Christian Fiction Writers Book of the Year award.
Of her books, Publisher’s Weekly has written, “Warren lays bare her characters’ human frailties, including fear, grief, and resentment, as openly as she details their virtues of love, devotion, and resiliency. She has crafted an engaging tale of romance, rivalry, and the power of forgiveness.”
And Library Journal adds, “Warren's characters are well-developed and she knows how to create a first rate contemporary romance…”
Susan is also a nationally acclaimed writing coach, teaching at conferences around the nation and winner of the 2009 American Christian Fiction Writers Mentor of the Year award. She loves to help people launch their writing careers and is the founder of Novel.Academy and www.LearnHowtoWriteaNovel.com, a writing website that helps authors get published and stay published. She’s also the author of the popular writing method, The Story Equation.

Talk about going out with a bang! Susan May Warren has, once again, outdone herself. I'm not what you'd call a thriller junkie, or a fan of action-driven spy and military stories--but if Susan May Warren writes them, gimme! Especially after this one, which was definitely the best in the Global Search and Rescue series.
This is when I would normally talk about the individual characters, the relationships, and so on--and all of that is great. But for perhaps the first time, the plot is what kept my pages turning and made me give this book a perfect rating. The plot is easily Susie's best-crafted, and kept me not only guessing, but racing through the book.
The plot of The Price of Valor takes risks I have never seen a Christian fiction book take. Maybe any book, but particularly a Christian one. Without spoiling anything, I never knew where Signe and Ham's relationship was going to go, or if it could survive. More than once, I said to myself, "There is no way in Heaven, on Earth, or under the earth, they can fix this." Throw in the red herrings and the doubts about Signe's story, and that element just got stickier. Yet, Susie handled it so well, every piece made sense. She wrote Signe as so relatable, determined, and vulnerable, that I never once thought she was a terrorist. As for Ham...yes, our swoon-worthy hero is back!
But before I get to the characters and other threads, I've got to brag on the plot a little bit more. First, The Price of Valor is easily the scariest Susan May Warren book I've read--and I've read 90% of her stuff. That plunge in the ancient lift, that toxic volcano cloud...I had an adrenaline rush right there in the safety of my bed. I never felt Ham and the rest of the team were unbelievable in their skills and stunts, but they did have me on the edge of my seat often. Couple that with the high-stakes relationships and--just how did I sleep, again?
Speaking of the relationships and characters, yes, gotta brag on them. Signe and Ham's relationship is possibly my favorite of the series (although Aria and Jake were amazing, so I'm unsure). I loved how Ham and Signe had known each other since they were kids, had such a rich history, and rescued each other in equal measure, physically, mentally, and spiritually. I especially applaud Susie for putting a twist on an old trope, giving the hero and not the heroine the Cinderella circumstances. With anybody but Ham, it wouldn't work, but he's manly enough that his vulnerabilities come across as human, not pathetic.
Additionally, I loved the scenes with Signe, Ham, and Aggie as a family, and the scenes in Deep Haven, brief though they were. I rooted for this family to make it, to find "normal," but the reason I did was because so much of their lives weren't "normal." More than any other book, Susan May Warren used this one to show that not everything can always be tied up in a pretty bow. The "American Dream" is a lot more complicated than we think, and sometimes it's not possible. But God...
Ah, yes, God. Yup, the spiritual threads are spot on, too. Valor's spirituality is both subtle and organic, and straight to the point. In a way, it's not subtle at all; characters talk openly about God, their faith, and refreshingly, the way faith intermingles with their doubts and past mistakes. But the spiritual thread is also organic because most of it simply exists in how the characters live their lives. They run more often than not, but God chases them, and they find nothing but His open arms when they finally trust. This was especially great for Signe because of her background and her complex choices, but I loved seeing everyone find God's love.
In short, if you haven't read this yet, grab a copy ASAP (although you might want to savor, as I did; I waited more than a week after the release date because I didn't want it to end). This is, again, Susie's best yet. I don't know how or if she'll top this--but I'm sure sticking around to find out.
Ham is a character I loved since we first met him in the Montana Rescue series and continued enjoying his character with his rescue mission in the Montana Marshall series and now this Global Search and Rescue series. He is solid and supportive and the emotional journey he had to go through in this series he managed to survive thanks to his solid faith.
Orion - my heart broke for him in this story. He was so vulnerable and took a chance on his own happy ending. He stole my heart with his brokenness in book one. I was a bit anti-Jenny for a while, but like the author always does well, Jenny got back into my good books as their story plot developed.
Signe was a difficult character to connect with, and till the end the author had me totally guessing on Signe's sincerity and honesty.
“The answer isn’t in knowing the plan, but trusting God, daily, to give you direction. To help you sacrifice your own desires, and to love.”
Susan May Warren has a talent of throwing her character into difficult situations, then adding another level of danger and action, and this story was no different. The characters and this reader had barely enough time to come up for air before the next dangerous wave hit.
Secretly I love CIA stories, so I loved that the CIA was part of this story. The mystery and action was captivating, and I enjoyed how a big mystery plot, which started in the Montana Marshall series, was concluded in this book. On that note, I would recommend reading the Montana Marshall series first before this series (and all books in order), just to get a complete picture of what is going on and all the characters involved.
I also loved the visit from Pete from the Montana Rescue series.
“But God calls you to be a warrior. To train, to wait for his command. And that’s why you have to lean hard into him. Fill your mind with prayer, with Scripture, with truth. Let God be to you all he says he is—strength, peace, grace, love, . . . joy.”
Another great story by Susan May Warren, which includes everything I've come to love by this author: great characters, awesome danger and action and bringing God into the struggles and answers.
Fear, desperation, anger and all emotions tied up in this mans heart and mind.
However, between them like a roaring lion, evil was standing in their way.
Was their nation worth what they had to do? Read The Price of Valor for answers.
She reminds us through the characters about how far, deep and wide God's love is for us . And He is indeed the One who always comes after us and cleanses us from hurts and shame.
