Editorial Reviews
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was a New York Times best selling book that has turned into a phenomenon. Based on the best seller by Jane Austen, the PPZ franchise has spawned a graphic novel, a video game and now a major motion picture releasing on over 3000 screens on Feb 5th. Composer Velazquez has made a name for himself in recent years, most recently scoring Crimson Peak, and Hercules.

The composer puts the Basque National Orchestra to work by beginning the score with an eerie growl in track one that develops into a heroic gallop. This introductory piece eventually concludes with music that appears to be more mysterious than horrifying. It's a good start and certainly lets us know that this isn't our mother's copy of Pride and Prejudice here. Velazquez begins to show us his expertise in creating music that fits the period with track 2, "An Illustrated History of England". It's a very chamber music styled piece that starts with a playful rendition of "Rule Britannia". The piece is indeed very story like and listening to it definitely brings to mind that you are flipping through the pages of a child's illustrated history book. It moves along several events indicated by the changing music. There is a brief bit of Asian themed music which must have something to do with the main story because you hear a similar reference later in the score as well. Velazquez even throws in a couple of jigs into the mix as well with "The Man From Uribe" (track 4) and "Dance of the Ponderous Distaff" (track 5). The score briefly becomes more action oriented with "We are Under Attack" (track 6) and this is actually a great track. It is very rhythmic and something you'd expect to hear in a super hero movie. It's here that we find the Asian musical reference again too. It's a great track that sounds as if it is about to develop into something electronically techno as it builds but it shifts suddenly at the peak of it's crescendo into a very soft and sentimental piece that is quite beautiful. It never really gets a chance to develop however but it does provide a nice segue into the next track, "Carriage Ride". Unfortunately, "Carriage Ride" is over too soon as well and this is the one gripe I have with some of these shorter pieces. While perfectly timed for a movie sequence, they can leave the soundtrack listener wanting a bit more.
Velazquez definitely has a good grasp of the musical style of the period. He certainly proved this with some of the pieces from "Crimson Peak" as well. There are plenty of moments reflected throughout the score that have a very classic sound. One of my favorites is "Menuet Des Mortes Vivants" (track 10). You gotta love that title, Menuet of the Living Dead! A "menuet" is a dance and Velazquez does a great job with this piece. The score is just full of surprises. From Asian themes, to Irish Jigs, classic sounding period pieces, and even an eerie pipe organ in "St. Lazarus" (track 13)...this soundtrack never gets dull. The most action oriented piece happens to be the longest one in this score release. Running a little over 5 minutes, "Zombies are Fed/Attack/Showdown" (track 21) is the most climatic. It runs the course of several movements which helps to keep things interesting however. The score concludes with two beautiful pieces, "After the Explosion" (track 22) and "Happy Ending?" (track 23). You'll notice the question mark for the last track. Velazquez appears to answer that question with the music quite nicely.
It's a great score and I have enjoyed listening to it throughout the day. It's not overly saturated with only bombastic action music but surprises with some very beautiful and romantic themes as well. The film itself could be just a fun clash of literary genres but Velazquez's music blends these elements quite nicely by producing a score that is never dull and delightful to listen to. The CD release has been released through Varese Sarabande records and contains 23 tracks with a running time of about 59 minutes. The CD also contains an 8 page insert that is mostly photos from the film with a few brief production credits. I recommend!
May Fernando Velazquez have a long and distinguished career. This CD is excellent.
