A priest is called out of isolation by a Sherriff to rescue his beloved from horrible creatures. Training priests to have superpowers to fight a creature with wars that have destroyed modern man and creatures and turned the world into an apocalyptic wasteland. An interesting perspective on a species before they became mixed with human.

Outside the protected walls the scenery is stark. Within the city walls the city is a terrifed hopeless mess of people ruled by Priests who have lost sight of God and rule through fear. But, that's religion for you.

A search and rescue mission filled with suspense and adventure. The music is gorgeous and the stunts are plentiful and entertaining. The creatures are familiar but with a slightly different twist. But, I will let you watch the movie without the spoiler.

I like Priest. It introduced a novel vampire history, explaining dystopia and resulting religious oligarchy, including how the physically superior vampires evolved and became vulnerable. Priest showed humans trapped in stagnating cities and as dirt farmers clawing a living from a praire dustbowl. It showed the difficulty that specially talented individuals experience living among everybody else. It was built around realistic conflict between family members, friends, leaders, and ideologies. Just like real life.
I felt real compassion for the characters, without the need for phony back stories, maudlin scenes, or gushing emotions. If you want to see the personalities of the characters, just listen to them, watch them, and observe their values / judgments. Just like real life.
So what's the problem? The disk itself did not agree with me. I don't like to have to fast forward through endless Sony advertisements and trailers of motion pictures I will never want to watch. And the 5.1 sound cut through my ears with fingernails-on-blackboard treble (ouch my headache) and weak doddery bass . I couldn't get it to play satisfactorily on my system, and so I cannot recommend it.
The video quality and the story were great. The actors managed some of their better performances. But the sound was a killer.

I'll admit right up front that I've never read the graphic novel this is based on so I have zero preconceptions going in. I love this movie. The cast is nearly flawless, especially Bettany, Urban, and Maggie Q. The world that is created is typically dystopian with the Church holding absolute power within the city walls. Outside the walls is a desolate wasteland where people struggle to survive but at least are free from the Church.

After a centuries-long war between humans and vampires (who are sightless animalistic creatures and not your Anne Rice or Twilight vamps), the Church created a legion of super-soldiers, the Priests, who wiped out most of the vamps. The ones that remained were put in reservations out in the wastelands and the Church disbanded the Priests. Now, however, the vamps are back and Bettany's Priest defies the Church to search for his niece (Lily Collins) who has been kidnapped by a mystery vampire.

Admittedly, the plot doesn't break a lot of new ground and you'll be able to guess what happens throughout but I enjoyed all but one character (the reallllllly young sheriff who is in love with Collins is a bit of a douchebag, honestly) but I still recommend this. Like others in these reviews, I would have loved to see a sequel but it won't happen. Perhaps an animated sequel, Sony???

Sounds like our situation in 2011 in the United States!

Yes, it's "just" a movie, but it does indeed have theological operational applications. For example, sometimes an individual who is striving for Holy Living under the One God of Love and Peace is compelled by The Holy Spirit (God's Spirit) to get his or her hands dirty and choose to be used as an instrument by God who anoints him with supernatural abilities. His Faith in God is true, yet he knows that he must do Good Works, too.

Another theological application is that the main villain (main antagonist) is not the once-good priest who was captured and unwillingly turned evil or the Mother of The Hive; the main evil is the head leader of the human government who IS their judicial, legislative and executive branch in one person. Most importantly, that one leader (The One) deceives and controls Holy Men and Women and all those under his Anti-Godly SPELL in their human theocracy.

This antagonist refuses to call evil what evil is and refuses to use powerful and anointed resources at his disposal to destroy evil. Instead, this antagonist orders the use of these same resources AGAINST Good Men doing Good.

The antagonist leader represents the Ultimate Enemy and represents the Ultimate Evil in human skin. He serves as the most senior human leader: as Commander In Chief of the most powerful human Force of Good on earth, which is a Christian-based nation (a cross is used extensively in the movie).

Any similarity to this antagonist character in the movie to a current leader in the United States is fully in the reader's discernment.

Keep the Faith and be of good cheer because Good ultimately prevails over evil. Why? Because Good Men choose to do Good Works by getting their hands dirty to combat evil. Today may be the day for you to choose and make that decision.

Priest è un film molto particolare. Non aspettatevi l’ennesimo film di paura spicciola. E’ qualcosa di diverso. Innanzitutto è tratto da una graphic novel coreana. La cosa si fa interessante. La seconda particolarità è il connubio tra le città (sempre buie, fredde, spartane caotiche alla “Blade Runner”) e i paesaggi western. Già, perché questa storia è uno spaghetti-western ipertecnologico: armi inedite di ogni sorta, moto mai viste prima superveloci e scene d’azione veramente ben fatte con duelli all’arma bianca immediati. Per certi versi potrebbe essere un “Blade” (senza lo "splatterismo" di quella trilogia) col misticismo di Altaïr, sommato al bellissimo Red Steel 2 (videogioco FPA per Wii dallo stile unico e con un gameplay ancora a distanza di anni insuperato).
L’aver usato attori “veri” conferisce credibilità alla storia. Paul Bettany ha una bellissima voce italiana ma anche la sua è perfettamente pertinente al personaggio che interpreta: profonda ed introspettiva.
L’egemonia della Chiesa che ottusamente rinnega la minaccia incombente è verosimile alle situazioni gà vissute dall’umanità nell’oscurantismo medievale. Questi Preti sono come i Templari e il loro ordine fa la loro stessa fine nella clandestinità.
Si percepisce il tormento religioso dei protagonisti rinnegati dalla società che hanno loro malgrado contribuito a creare. La loro vocazione e sacrificio sono palpabili così come l’astinenza sessuale.
Come potete vedere il film apre ben più di una porta. Gli 87 minuti di visione volano in fretta come se si leggesse un albo a fumetti. Tutto concentrato senza momenti morti. Il budget è stato spremuto al meglio.
Questo universo ha ben più da dirci e dato che il film non è stato affatto un flop sarebbe bello vedere come proseguono le gesta dei Preti.
Il comparto sonoro è pregevole: le musiche di stampo religioso prendono veramente lo spettatore alla gola accentuando il forte senso di pressione religiosa che tiene soggiogata la popolazione che vive in città-fortezza disseminate in territori brulli alla “Mad Max”.
Ultima nota per la censura che si è sicuramente espressa più per il tema religioso che per la violenza e sanguinarietà in sé. Dal canto mio evito i film horror e se devo fare un parallelismo è più cruento “Cowboy & Aliens” di Priest! L’obbiettivo di questo film non è spaventare lo spettatore ma farlo riflettere.

Je suis entièrement d'accord avec l'avis de Lotito "vvos", cette édition en boitier steelbook est de toute beauté (bien que limitée à 4000 ex, je n'ai trouvé aucun numéro dessus le justifiant, mais peu importe...). Image de très bonne qualité et une fois de plus Sony arrive à mettre 3 pistes son en DTS HD MA (Lossless) de très bonne facture.
Bravo, une édition digne du support Blu Ray.
Pour le film en lui même, les avis artistique étant très subjectifs, je dirais donc juste que ce film m'a bien plu sans être un monument, un bon moment de divertissement, c'est l'essentiel. Alors oui, 5 étoiles pour l'édition et 4 pour le film.
