About the Author

Doug McGuff, MD, FAAEM became interested in exercise, diet, and human performance at the age of 15 when he took up weight training to improve his performance in the sport of bicycle motocross. While trading janitorial services for a membership at a Nautilus gym, he stumbled upon Arthur Jones’ Nautilus Training Bulletin No. 2. In 1989, he graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio; he went on to train in emergency medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at Little Rock, where he served as Chief Resident. From there, Dr. McGuff served as faculty in the Wright State University Emergency Medicine Residency and was a staff emergency physician at Wright-Patterson AFB Hospital. In 1995, Dr. McGuff completed his tour of duty in the Air Force and became a partner in Blue Ridge Emergency Physicians, P.A. in Seneca, South Carolina. In 1997, he realized a lifelong dream when he opened Ultimate Exercise, a personal training studio specializing in state-of-the-art high intensity exercise.

I picked up this book mostly for the work of Robert Murphy who is a great economist and has a good knack for explaining complicated concepts and topics on different levels of understanding. I don't know much about McGuff and never heard of him, myself, before this book.

This book is really two books in one and may not appeal to everyone. On one end you have Murphy's writing about the history of health insurance/healthcare in America, the Affordable Care Act, and government intervention in healthcare. And on the other hand you have McGuff's background as a doctor and promoting a primal/paleo lifestyle.

What I was looking for more, and what I was hoping for more was a look of the history of healthcare, what's wrong with it, and what to do to fix it. And the pairing of an economist and a doctor would be able to greatly blend a lot of great information into one useful book.

While this book does provide a lot of great information and critiques of government hurt and industry general business practices, I don't think this is a great reference book to give to someone or reference completely. There is a good critique of the ACA and the background history is book, but having a better basis of the formula of "We do X. Y is the result. However, if we did A, B would be the result. B would be better than Y and A > X". Other writings by Murphy follows this formula and others in his circle of friends.

I could also see some benefit of adding information of McGuff's chapters but it feels too much like two different books. It would have been better incorporated into the other chapters or made smaller. And there is a lot of good incites and recommendations that McGuff gives. It just tends to feel like two different authors wrote their parts and put them together to appeal to two different audiences.

Also, the ending where the libertarian ideal responses to improve the system were covered very quickly and not too much in the way of apologetics were made. Again, another section that could be incorporated into an overall narrative.

I did enjoy the book overall. I was just hoping it would be a great libertarian/Austrian economic/rational medical care resource that presented the information better. Final Grade - B-

My intuition told me that there is no way that free market capitalism screwed up our healthcare system. I had bits and pieces of information for why that was, but I didn't have the complete big picture.

That was the case until I read this book.

Economist Bob Murphy did an amazing job explaining how government and regulation threw a monkey wrench in the US health care system. I now feel confident to engage in a conversation on this hot button topic with anyone.

The other part of the book, written mainly by Dr. McGuff, was jam packed with very useful information on how to navigate through our healthcare system (while keeping a 'primal' mindset found in Mark Sisson's, The Primal Blueprint [ASIN:1939563305]). His candid discussion on what it is like to work inside of the system and how to make sure you, the patient, doesn't slip through the cracks is priceless.

Sick Care indeed.

If you want a non-partisan explanation of what is wrong with the American health care system and what you can do to try to protect yourself as much as possible this book is a good place to start. Murphy, the Economist, leads us through the no doubt well meaning politics and laws that have brought the health care system to the brink of collapse. Both Republicans and Democrats share the blame here. McGuff, the M.D., regales us with stories of the problems doctors and hospitals are faced with and provides advice on how to navigate the broken system as much as possible. What I got from reading this book is if you are healthy do everything possible to stay that way. If you are enmeshed in the system due to ill health there is valuable information here for you regarding drugs and diet.

The Doctors explain what is really going on in US healthcare.

Another example of Dr. Murphy's ability to explain. Add in the explanations from Dr. McGuff and you have a real treasure here.

Many (most?) of us can see just how broken the US healthcare system is. It is easy to point to the ACA ("Obamacare") as the culprit. However Drs. McGuff & Murphy go back to the beginning and show each incremental step leading us where we are today.

Terrific to have perspectives of both an accomplished economist and an accomplished ER physician to describe and explain what we the public are struggling to comprehend.

AND - now that the book is no longer brand-new, we can see how well their predictions about the successes & failures of ACA came true. Well worth reading!

Read this to understand "what" and "why" healthcare in the US is so messed up--and how to avoid it as much as possible

Anyone who wants to:
a) Claim they know what the problems and solutions are for the healthcare system crisis in America,
and/or
b) Try to stay out of being caught up in the system to the greatest extent possible
should read this book.
I work in healthcare and am a proponent of the primal lifestyle and diet that this book is also a fan of. And I totally agree with the authors' premises and conclusions. At times it got a little "OK, I got the point, move on" but I don't blame them for doing it because at least their arguments end up being thorough and rock solid.
