The Emmy®-winning crime series seen on PBS
"A perfect marriage of astoundingly talented actress and brilliantly conceived character" --USA Today
"Riveting" --The Boston Globe
Oscar® winner Helen Mirren is Detective Jane Tennison, "one of the great character creations of our time" (The Washington Post), in a series that won more than 20 major international awards and raised the bar for police dramas.
Tenacious, driven, and deeply flawed, Tennison rises through the ranks of Britain’s Metropolitan Police, solving horrific crimes while battling office sexism and her own demons. “Rare is the drama that works so well on two levels: as a crackling whodunit and as a finely tuned character study of a strong but insecure woman trying to prove herself in a man’s world” (Time).
Seen on Masterpiece Theatre and Mystery! and created by crime writer Lynda La Plante, Prime Suspect features some of Britain’s biggest stars, including Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient), Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton), Zoë Wanamaker (Poirot), David Thewlis (Harry Potter), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes), Ciarán Hinds (Jane Eyre), Tom Bell (Reilly: Ace of Spies), and Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting).

Having the complete collection from season one to the final episode allows you to experience Mirren's Chief Inspector Jane Tennison develop and grow from the "women's libber" who has invaded the male-dominated "old boy's club" of police detectives in the 80's and 90's, until the final episode where she has made her mark and showed how high the bar had been set for those who would follow in her footsteps.
My only criticism of the entire series is that at times, particularly in the "squad room" scenes the sound is not really clear and I found myself turning up the volume and hitting the replay button a number of times so as not to miss what was said.
If you speak non-British Englsih, you'll probably want to take advantage of the closed-caption feature because the accents are pretty thick. As an American, I have trouble understanding a decent amount of the dialogue--which you really don't want to miss.
I'm not naturally drawn to the law and order genre; the only other series like this that I've watched and enjoyed was Hill Street Blues. I'm enjoying Prime Suspect for many of the same reasons.
What sets the series apart is how realistic it is in dealing with crime, punishment, politics, prejudice, and corruption head on in a frank manner. There is not always a requisite happy ending, lending to the gritty realism, just like there is not always a happy ending in real life..
American television attempted to bring Jane to New York, but it just did not translate well and turned the main protangonist into a caricature. See the original instead.
