I really enjoy Matthew Ballard's writing. His characters possess depth and realism, and their unique quirks paint a detailed picture. Following Ethan as he went from staunch authoritarian to a free man who accepts magic and its shades of grey was deeply enjoyable and very compelling. I found that I empathized with him even when he was in the wrong and didn't know any better. It was easy to see that Ethan's character, though flawed, was loyal and good at his core. It made his transformation throughout the book that much more fun to read.
This story is SO FUN. That's another thing I love about Ballard's books- the plot hummed along and kept me engaged for a very long evening reading session. The action progressed in a way that felt natural, and characters didn't make choices just for the sake of moving the action forward. Along that same vein, the system of magic was very unique and fresh while still making sense.
The ONLY thing that keeps this book from getting five stars are the really oddball errors that popped up throughout the book. Some are grammatical and some are formatting, although i hardly let them detract from what I considered to be a great story.
The ending, although not too terribly surprising, set up book two perfectly. I can't wait for the next title to come out!
