The author includes both the legends and documented facts of the Prince's life, but he makes very clear which is which, debunking the ridiculous claims and letting some rather damning letters speak for themselves. In short, the Ripper connection is verified nonsense, but Albert Victor's carefully hidden involvement in the Cleveland Street scandal is backed by solid evidence. A frank, well researched and very readable trip back to the demimonde of Victorian society.

A thoughtful and engaging biography that enriches one's understanding of the homosexual subculture of Victorian England. Recommended as a fun and informative read.

The author does an outstanding job of researching the life of Prince Eddy, but with records burned or distorted, there is no definitive proof of Eddy's philandering. There certainly is enough circumstantial evidence, and it's very interesting the length the Royal family went to, in order to cover up his homosexuality. A web of secrets tangled and dispersed until no sense could possibly be made of them..
After reading this book, my opinion is, Prince Edward was homosexual. He was not bright nor did he have any ambition other than satisfying his own carnal lust. He was not a sportsman, didn't ride, rejected both the Army & Navy as too much work and was apparently very dim witted. His only redeeming quality seems to be his devotion to his mother & sisters.
Thank God for George!

I had ordered several books on the subject not knowing exactly what went on. I read the other reviews before making the purchase and have to agree that it is a fair and balanceed account of the scandal. After all these years, you have to wonder what else can be said and what other information can be dug up? The author does a fantastic job without making it sleazy or a questionable read. If you are interested in the subject matter, this is a great place to start. Kind of got interested from "Kings Speech" and went back with the whole Royal History thing and Jack The Ripper. Have to say - A little bit of everything for everyone.

Theo Aronson is the best biographer ever. You can be certain that anything written by him is going to be enjoyable.

A little repetitive, sordid in parts and riveting in others...a glimpse into a pre-internet and social media world, where privilege was enough to protect you from almost anything. Ultimately inconclusive, it does offer up food for thought and reminds us that in some ways? Little has changed...

Too much info on homosexual behavior (for me!). Interesting Prince to study.

Turgid and totally boring it escapes me why it was ever published. Consign it to the fire is the best that I can say.

A good piece of work but a bit underwhelming. Nevertheless a worthwhile read.

Lifestyles don't seem to change for the Royals who are different - even now!

I really enjoyed this book because I knew so little about Prince Eddy. I think his sexuality and homosexual lifestyle would of course be viewed very differently these days (or would it - being a royal Prince?). I felt so sad for him. A well written book.

None of this is proven so you have to take this with a pinch of salt. Interesting though and worth reading if you like history.
