There are rules that make being Fog City’s Prince of Killers bearable.
The rules Hawes Madigan lives by.
Soon, he’ll be king—of an organization of assassins—and the crown has never felt heavier. Until the mysterious Dante Perry swaggers into his life.
No collateral damage.
Dante looks like a rock god and carries himself like one too.
But there’s more than meets the eye beneath those loose limbs and casual confidence.
He also carries a concealed weapon, a private investigator’s license, and a message for the prince—someone inside Hawes’s organization is out to kill the future king.
No unvetted targets.
In the chaos that follows the timely warning, Hawes comes to depend on Dante.
On his skills as an investigator, on the steadiness he offers, and on their moments alone when Hawes lets Dante take control.
As alliances are tested and traitors exposed, Hawes needs Dante at his back... and in his bed. But if the PI ever learns Hawes’s darkest secret, it’s not heartbreak he’ll have to worry about—but a bullet to the brain instead.
There’s no shortage of twists and turns in this MM romantic suspense trilogy from Layla Reyne. Prince of Killers is book one of three. Fair warning: buckle up, cliffhangers ahead!

Dante is a private investigator, Hawes isn’t sure he can trust him but doesn’t have much choice. Soon the two can’t deny the attraction growing between them, but still, Hawes doesn’t trust Dante fully.
It was a rollercoaster of emotion and it keeps you guessing chapter to chapter.
I love the interactions with Hawes and Dante and the dynamic between Hawes and his siblings is fantastic.
And OF COURSE, ends with a cliffhanger.
I've been a fan of Layla Reyne since I picked up Single Malt, the first book in her Agents Irish and Whiskey series. I loved the spin-off series, Trouble Brewing just as much and I was really sad to see those series end. Needless to say, I was more than a little excited when I found out that Reyne had started a new series. One book in and I'm pretty sure I have a new favorite... if it doesn't kill me first.
Hawes was trying to make changes for the better in his family business, but evidently, not everyone was happy. He wasn't sure about Dante's warning, but it didn't take long for him to figure out he knew exactly what he was talking about. Soon, he wasn't sure who he could trust - even those he was closest to. He wasn't absolutely sure that he could trust Dante, but the attraction between them was too strong to ignore.
The action was non-stop, the danger was constant and the heat between Dante and Hawes was off the charts. This was definitely one of those books that was hard to put down.
Oh, and that warning about a cliff hanger... yeah, it's a really good thing that King Slayer is already available. The only question now is, do I dive right in or do I wait for the third book because after Prince of Killers, I don't know if I can handle another ending like this one.
This story is told from Hawes POV and it does get a bit confusing at times since him and his siblings all have names that start with H. Yes, this happens a LOT in the real world but with books, I easily get confused and that’s definitely on me.
This is different from Layla Reyne’s Agents of Irish and Whiskey and Trouble Brewing series, so I’m interested in seeing where this book leads. The preview into book two caught my eye and I can’t wait for the drama that’s bound to happen with the next book.
THAT SAID. This book DOES end with a cliffhanger. There’s no HFN at the end of this one but all the books are already out, so there's no wait needed before diving into the rest of the series.
Characters are fleshed out carefully and thoroughly, mini-plots woven to a crescendo of a climax. Stage drawn well. First of a trio that begs for the next.
As I am a gatherer of books, I collect books and ebooks from a variety of sources: Goodreads wins, Bookhub, BookFunnel, emails from authors and publishers, and others. I do lose track of their sources. But, as a reader, I feel I should give an honest, unencumbered review for all I read.

“Everything he’d never dared hope for, everything he never thought he could have. Until now.”
Ahh.
This story hooked me from the start. Hawes Madigan has an empire and reputation to protect. Dante Perry is a mystery to Hawes and is probably gonna bring it all down. And yet, they can't stay away from each other.
The only reason I didn't read this in one sitting is because life things got in the way and I had to focus on them. But I really enjoyed it.
There were twists I kinda had a feeling about and some I was clueless about. The suspense book shockingly had suspense and made me all angsty and that was rude.(heh)
I liked getting to know the Madigan family (although all the H names made me a little twitchy), the book is fast paced and pulls you in. The tensionnnn between Dante & Hawes is delicious especially in the beginning. Loved it. Later on, there's still this low humming tension, this uncertainty about how they'll move forward and there is something great about their dynamic but it also felt lacking too. Can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe because Dante's POV is missing? I don't know. So I'm going to rate it 3.5 Stars and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series which I expect to enjoy more and more as it progresses.

Expect more twists and turns than a cow's digestive system 😉. When you run your own vigilante firm, who can you trust when things start to go wrong?? Who else wants a piece of the action?? Who isn't happy with what you're trying to do, and thinks they can do a better job??
Unfortunately only some of these questions will be answered in this instalment...yes, it IS a cliffie so if you're one of those readers that hates cliffhangers, this read will probably NOT be for you...yet 😊.

This one feels very light on the world building, filled with plot holes and definitely not as hot.
They jump into the relationship way too fast, specially for somebody that should be an extremely guarded assassin.
