As an adult, I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit how much I loved this trilogy; aaahhh, but how I adore beguiling an entire weekend with a captivating series! Although I’m sadly way past my teenage years, I found myself asking a friend, “Team Aspen or Team Maxon?”. Of course, there’s only one true answer to that question, but I’ll let you decide for yourself. Think of this series as Cinderella meets The Bachelor: sweet and subdued at its core, fierce and cut-throat behind the scenes, and wickedly alluring.
I’ve rated the three novels based solely on my enjoyment of them, and not on the technical aspects of the writing (which were mildly lacking, in order to appeal to a younger audience). However, what’s life without a few guilty pleasures? And exciting dystopian novels are mine!
The author does a tremendous job with her cliffhangers; once you start, you just can’t stop! The main characters are so irresistible! Initially, I must say, there were just a few too many princess names thrown around to keep track of. Once they were dwindled down, I really got a better idea of their endearing personalities. I must also admit that the first novel didn’t fully engage me until the second quarter, at which point, I literally couldn’t put it down.
I also got a kick out of the author’s acknowledgements at the end. She made the readers feel as if they were old friends, and expressed her gratitude in a witty and hilarious way, “Well, hello there, sassy reader! I hope it made you have unbearable feelings that you find yourself tweeting about at 3:00 am. That’s what it does to me…”. Dare I admit it, Ms. Cass, you succeeded! Thank you for creating a series that both teens and adults can enjoy, without all of the gratuitous violence that so many of these dystopian authors have resorted to.
So now, I must ask, when do the movies come out?!
So now, the Prince. Maxon. Love of my fictional-wish-I-had life! This book is really nothing more than a peek into his head and at what was going on in his brain during a few of the key beginning scenes. We see more of his first impressions on the selected, specifically America, but we also get snippets of the pressure from his Father. That gave him some real depth. Basically, I love the guy even more now. You think he's swoony when you're NOT in his brain. But now? Dudes, he is so worth everything. America, you better get your game on. I'm gonna fight you for him. Everything we get a peek at just made him WORK, from his romantic side, to caring Maxon, to classic funny Maxon.
Addressing the premise really quick, it mentions another girl. Well news-flash? She's not that prominent in here. It's just a mini obstacle/friend who ends up making him question himself, which adds even MORE depth to him. Thanks Daphne! :D One thing I did love was Queen Amberly. We really don't know that much about her in The Selection, but oh you guys, I love her so much. She's like the sweetest, most caring mother, and aaaw!! They have the best relationship. She balances out the obvious pressure from his Father and....eeeee!....it's just so sweet.
*happy sigh* So yup, while adding more depth and character to the reason we all love these books, The Prince doesn't need to be read before the Elite. And for me who is still DYING to get her hands on the Elite [hurry UP library], this is just what I needed.

This novella comes in just before the start of the selection and runs to Prince Maxon's first meeting with America. At 60 ish pages it is short but just enough to get your teeth into.
I love it because it really gives an insight into Maxon's feelings and thoughts. I never really thought about how the process of the Selection affects him, it's not something he chose to do, it's just tradition and I liked to see how he reacted to the whole run up to the event.
I loved Maxon before and always backed him as America's choice and after reading this novella I am sure I want them to be together even more. Maxon is such a good guy and really does care about his future and that of the country and his new wife, whoever she may end up being.
It also gave us a better view of Maxon's parents and I am more sure than ever that I don't like his dad. But I am intrigued to know more.
This has got me even more excited for the series and I can't wait for the next installment.

This was a really short novella so i wizzed through it after finishing The Selection and before starting The Elite, and to be honest i think that would be the best order to read these three books in. It was interesting to see things from Maxons point of view, how he and his family function, the fact that there was another girl in his life!! Oh and how his feelings for America are kindled. I enjoyed seeing how his father reacts to the selection, and how much closer Maxon is to his mother than his father. Is it my imagination or are all Kings really tough on their sons? At least this Prince has a wonderful mother to turn to. I would love to read a little bit of the history of Queen Amberley, we know a little but i'd like to know what her life is like as a comparison to whoever becomes the princess with Maxon.
I wouldn't say that you need to read this novella to understand the other books in the series but it is interesting if only for the different perspective you get on the whole process and for 99p it's not a bad price. Although thinking about it we only have two books from the series and maybe Maxons previous female friend might make an appearance later on as America's previous love has ... could be interesting!

The Prince is a short novella told from Prince Maxon's point of view and is set just before The Selection. I have to admit that as much as I love him, I'm really not sure how I feel about seeing inside his head. In The Selection, I seem to remember him coming across as a confident and charming prince but The Prince shows us his worries and insecurities. On the plus side, this does serve to make him look more like a normal human being - I mean, yes he is a prince but he's also just a man and if I'm honest, I also enjoyed seeing America through his eyes.
I'm wondering if the new information (particularly about his friend Daphne) will serve a purpose somewhere along the way and I wouldn't be surprised if she popped up again in the future.
Overall, I enjoyed The Prince and it was worth staying up after midnight to read it as soon as it was released. I was also very grateful to find the first two chapters of The Elite in the back of the book. Now I just need the rest!!!

I bought this one from Amazon.co.uk, as I have read and loved The Selection and am (im)patiently awaiting the release of The Elite.
I find the cover appealing and it certainly fits in with the colourful covers of the Selection Series.
The novella is basically the first small section of The Selection re-told from the point of view of Maxon - The Prince. I enjoyed reading the novella, it reminded me of all that I loved about The Selection and also aroused my impatience and need for the release of The Elite, which I am definitely looking forward to. I liked the point of view being from a male character and think it would also be interesting to read something from Aspen's point of view now that he is the guard watching over america whilst she stays at the Palace.
So did I enjoy the novella? Yes, it was a nice re-taster of this series. Would I recommend it? Although I would say that it isn't absolutely necessary to read the novella, it is a nice and welcome addition to the series, so yes I guess I would recommend it and at 99p (price correct at time of review) it is a fairly reasonable price for a novella. Will I read more of this Series?Yes, please! Would I read other books by Kiera Cass? Yes I would definitely take a look at other books by her.

I would definately recommend reading 'The Selection' first and then moving to this novella prior to reading 'The Elite'.
I'm doing my best to stay spoiler free but the novella does give you an indication that the deck is stacked and that there is more politics in play than 'The Selection' makes you aware.
