If you consider the price to be like the cost of admission to a museum the price is fair. But the collection is 2 pieces--armor for a man and armor for a horse. The photos are excellent and numerous. They highlight the incredible artistry that went into making princely armor. I review 2 other, larger and more complete armor books that I think will be more satisfying. I think this one will end up in the library.

a wonderful book

There is lots of detailed information on the context of the piece relating to who built it, who it was built for, and even lots of details of the cost of the piece and how that cost related to other things of that time period, which was certainly interesting. However, there aren't nearly enough pictures of the details of the piece, just a few wide shots of the armor from a perspective like what you would get by looking at it in a museum behind ropes. There are a few close ups of the gilded paintings on some of the plates, but no details of the articulation, seams, edging, rivets, interior, or anything else that would help a craftsman recreate the armor.

I bought this as reference material for a recent furniture commission. It's a great book and describes armor, it's development and decorative work in a great deal of detail.

Gut bebildert. Typische Elemente eines Harnisches der deutschen Frührenaissance, der transitorischen Periode - sich im Übergang vom gotischen auf den maximilianischen Stil findend - angesprochen.
