Princess Bride is one of those rarest of films where everything comes together as if by magic, with the story, the direction, the actors, and the musical score creating something unique, and much greater than the sum of the parts. It has become a cultural icon and entered the language, and its stature grows with the passing years. It could have been a typical boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl, boy-finds-girl romantic comedy, except that everything is slightly off-kilter and deliciously eccentric.

The story is being read by Grandpa to his bedridden grandson. The "heroes" are a pirate, a giant, and a revenge-obsessed Spanish swordsman. The villains are a Sicilian mastermind, a duplicitous Prince and his henchman, a six-fingered Count. The object of everyone's attention is the Princess Bride. The tale is vaguely situated in medieval Europe, and is filled with winking asides and intentional anachronisms. The Prince wearily announces that he is swamped with work, needing to prepare for his wedding, murder his bride and blame the neighboring country for it. His compassionate accomplice the Count counsels "get some rest, if you haven't got your health, you haven't got anything." Unknown places like Greenland and Australia ("populated by criminals") are casually mentioned, as is the classic advice "never get involved in a land war in Asia".

Princess Bride sports place names like the Cliffs of Insanity and the Fire Swamp, and creatures such as the Rodents of Unusual Size and the Shrieking Eels. These give some indication of the tongue-in-cheek fantasy nature of the story, as do the character names Dread Pirate Roberts, Prince Humperdink, and Princess Buttercup. The stately-looking clergyman who is to perform the wedding has a problem with pronouncing the letter "r"; "mawwaige" for marriage, and "have you the wing?" Just around every corner is some small delight, like Miracle Max and his lovely wife in their charming cottage. Drop by for a visit.

At the film's beginning, the farm boy's answer to the demands of his supervisor was always the same: "As you wish." And you couldn't wish for more than this delightful movie, presented in glorious high-definition. And if you don't already know, you will at last find the origin of the now-famous phrase "You killed my father. Prepare to die." It might take on extra meaning if you know that at its last utterance during the sword fight, the Spaniard (Mandy Patinkin) got so enthusiastic that he actually stabbed the six-fingered Count (Christopher Guest) in the thigh. Oops!

This film would be essential if it only told the story of Peter Falk as the grandfather of Fred Savage, but it's so much more. First, the story was written by Sir William Golding, the same author who gave us Lord Of The Flies. This story is considerably more redeeming, and suitable for children of all ages, their parents, and their parents' parents. It's the story of True Love, and how it manages to survive multiple assaults. I first watched the movie with my children (they're grown, and have children of their own now), and have probably watched it another 20 times since, with equal enjoyment. The film introduced me to Mandy Patinkin, who has since become one of my favorite actors, and showed the world a different Andre the Giant than the one known through professional wrestling. Then there are Cary Elwes, and Robin Wright, both of whom became major stars, and characters such as Miracle Max (Billy Crystal), and his wife (Carol Kane). There's never a dull moment, or a player who doesn't keep your attention, and as I wrote in the beginning, the interaction of Falk and Savage is remarkable. If you don't feel tears in your eyes when Falk delivers his last line, then you need to see a doctor, because you have a heart problem! I'm looking forward to watching this movie with my four grandchildren, one at a time!

I went to see the film in the cinema when it came out. When I watched it I liked it. By the time I got home I loved it and started to realize that I had just seen a film that would be loved and cherished for decades to come. I don't think there is a person in my circle of friends that doesn't have many of the lines in this film memorized. It really is a little film that became more than the sum of its parts.

I think what I like best about this film, is that not only is it not a Disney film but that it doesn't insult my intelligence. It also, unlike most Disney films, shows that all of us, even the princess and the hero have flaws and that we all suffer when we are hurt by someone we love.

I think there are many good reviews in here that explain the plot of this film so I am not going to go to fat into it. But, its basically a film about a princess who loses here true love and in the end he finds and rescues her. And in the end, everyone comes to understand, that in life, it is not our destination that matters but the journey we take to get there.

I want to make one quick comment about the 25th Anniversary Version (Bluray) that I purchased on Amazon. I LOVE Bluray but I was a bit disappointed in this particular Bluray. I have seen dozens of films that were produced in this era that have been transferred to Bluray and most of them are much more vibrant and sharp. I was quite disappointed to be honest. I happen to have this film on DVD as well and frankly I think the DVD version looks better.

Because this film is so amazing I am not going to let my disappointment in the Bluray transfer make me give the film a lower rating. But, if Amazon gave films a rating for technical quality I'd give this one 3 stars.

Absolutely, one of my very favorite movies of all time. "My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!" Many memorable quotes throughout this movie, including "As You Wish". This movie is great for the whole family. The kids get the lighter parts and the main storyline and the adults get the more "adult" humor that is very much rated PG. It has a wonderful story beneath the "story" meaning the grandparent is telling this tale to his grandson that seems to not care about it at all. As the story goes on the grandson becomes so involved he must know the ending! So many life lessons throughout the story and so many memorable characters that are so intelligently written that you cannot, not love this movie! Definitely one of my top 10 of all time.

The Princess Bride just might be the most perfect film of all time. Why? Because it has everything, and unlike most movies that have everything, it somehow manages to blend them all extremely well. There's adventure, love, humor, swordfights (fantastic sword fights!), character growth, interesting motivations, fantasy--you name it, it's probably in there and done well.

If you haven't seen it, you owe it to yourself to change that. The Blu Ray offers fantastic picture quality, a solid audio mix that's probably the best this film has ever had, and the kind of warmth that a lot of blu rays just don't have because they generate an image that's way too sharp. This has a sharpness level I'd call "just darn near perfect", using technical terms :)

To paraphrase; "There's a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to not rate this one with 5 stars." and "Love it, as I have loved it, and you will be happy."

There is nothing I can say about this movie that hasn't already been said; except that I love it. My children have watched it, I've made friends watch it and everyone comes back with their favorite quotes. You can't watch this movie and NOT be happy. The man in black, the drunken sot, the giant, the prince, the ancient booer, the miracle man and his wife Valerie, the greatest sword fight in movie history, perhaps in all history. What is there not to love? "You think this happens every day?"

So go. Watch "The Princess Bride". Be happy, as I am happy.

Timeless movie that has it all. Well, no ninjas, zombie, or nazi's -- that would push it to 6 stars.
I first saw the move when it came out. My kids have seen it on VHS and DVD, and now, my Grand kids are being introduced to one of the greatest movies ever made via streaming. Gather the family, grab some popcorn, snuggle up on the couch, and hit "play" - hold your breath when Buttercup falls into the lightening sand, rhyme along as our "bad guys" sail away with their prize.
Timeless. That's really all I needed to say.

Absolutely amazing quality. How can these be 25+ years old. It's a superb Blu-Ray. The image quality is absolutely amazing. There is more detail, image clarity, facial features, flaws displayed in this old pre-HD movie than 99 percent of the BS crap pouring out of Hollywood now. The movie is one of the finest. I put it in the same camp as Young Frankenstein, Monty P's Ze Holy Grail, Blazing Saddles, Da Blues Brothers, etc. If you need a solid reference for the film's humor just ask Aaron Rodgers, QB of da Packers. He quotes from The Princess Bride constantly, This is definitely a must own and a centerpiece to anyone's collection. What about Blu-Ray extra features, etc? I don't know. I just can't stop watching the movie over-and-over.

Watch this movie, as a gift to yourself! I just watched this movie - the first time in many years. What surprised me was the number of turns of phrase that have entered our lexicon. Especially, "Inconceivable!" and "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

This is the kind of movie that you enjoy even MORE, AFTER it's over.

“The Princess Bride
S. Morgenstern's
Classic Tale of True Love
and High Adventure

You had to admire a guy who called his own new book a classic before it was published and anyone had a chance to read it.”

The Princess Bride is one of those classic movies that you either immediately love or simply can't stand (really, I have yet to find someone in this category in real life). The movie features some very interesting story telling, where a grandfather tries to make his sick grandson feel a bit better and we the audience get to dive into the mind's eye and see the book come to life.

Memorable quotes, humorous moments, rodents of unusual size, a giant (played by "Andre the Giant"), sword fighting, and more will keep you entertained as you learn of the fate of this little fairytale kingdom.

Overall, this DVD captures all the appeal of the original release of this movie (in 1987) and updates it to an easy to watch, easy to enjoy digital format. Some nice Extras were added to this version, but nothing too special to warrant upgrading from a previous version if you already have one. Thankfully we were lacking this movie in our digital library (still had it on VHS) and getting the 20th Anniversary Edition was a good find.
