Editorial Reviews

Tooru Kouno left a sad family life to live at a prestigious all-boys boarding school. From his very first day, he feels like he's fallen into another world. The boys in his class seem to be strangely interested in his pretty-boy looks. He's shown around by Class President Sakamoto, who is mysteriously bowed to by everyone, even the upperclassmen. Tooru even catches a glimpse of an enchanting red headed Princess. A graceful blonde named Shihoudani finally reveals the school's secret. To inspire the student body, campus pretty boys are required to dress up as girls... and Tooru is on the list!

Tooru is a transfer student who entered the prestigious all boys Fujimori High school. After getting an... enthusiastic greeting from the other students, he is quickly flung into the world of Princesses, who are the prettiest first years chosen to dress as girls to bring excitement to the school and keep up morale. The idea is daunting at first, but the quirks (free meals and supplies, not to mention some spending money) quickly wins him over.

It's a cute series and every one involved is pretty. It's not just fun and games, however, as each of the three princesses, Tooru, the self-confident Yuujirou, and ever reluctant Mikoto, deal with their own personal problems and their growing (PLATONIC)friendships. It's short, and when you finish, you're satisfied, but you can't help but want more from this endearing series. The characters outside of the princess system are also incredibly entertaining; from the student council, the president being a former princess himself, to Akira Sakamoto-sama, the dependable 1st year class president and friend to the princesses.

It's a fun show at a good price and good clip. It shouldn't dissapoint.

Plot Summary: When beautiful Tooru transferred to an all-boys school, he received a warm welcome...but little did he know that his new classmates had nominated him for the academy's "Princess System." The lovely campus "Princesses" must dress as girls (in frilly Gothic Lolita costumes) at school events in order to lighten the stolid masculine atmosphere. Tooru balks at first, but soon comes to realize the advantages of being a "Princess."
This series is not really a "Yaoi" type, but does have pretty boys in cute girls outfits. It's more funny than serious and there is one kiss scene but not what you think.

Overall:

I recently started reading the manga for this series and have begun watching the anime series itself. I'm definitely finding the series to be quite entertaining and generally like the costume designs used for the three princesses.

Plot/Story:

While some would tend to call this series a Shounen-ai, it kinda pulls back from it a bit and centers around alot of the interplay between the various characters. You get to see more and more of the main characters as the series progresses. The series does alot of "don't judge a book by it's cover" themes, where what you expect to be the case turns out not to be.

Character Design:

Like many Anime/Manga offerings, the main characters definitely get the bulk of the drawing time. :) As you move away from the main characters, the quality of the drawing definitely lowers. Not that it's horrible, just worthwhile to note.

I particularly like the transformation of the three princesses between their normal and "work" looks. Overall, the drawing style is quite nice and similar to many other anime(s) out there.

Crossplay/Crossdressing/Yaoi aspects:

If you're not a big crossdress/crossplay/yaoi fan or are comfortable with the topic, the undertones of yaoi along with the overtones of crossplay/crossdress may bother you. Having said that, the "beautiful" male characters have the long angular face style that I've come to just associate with a certain look. Kinda like Clamp, actually. Where the character design for those who are more "cute" tend to retain the angular look, but includes more roundness in the facial features.

Looking at the design, and coloration/makeup, it gives the three princesses a very cool and slightly gothic look. Given the outfit designs, it's definitely reminiscent of the popular gothic lolita trend currently burning in Japan and spilling over into the states.

I bought this, expecting for it to be a shounen-ai or a yaoi, but its not.
It's just about three pretty boys going to school, who dress up like girls to get special privileges at the school.
It's funny, but unless you're just in the mood for a pretty-boy comedy, its not for you. But it IS good.
