The Princess Guide To Rome Paperback – April 10, 2014

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 22 ratings

There is a newer edition of this item:

Packed with truly helpful information and well-researched background stories on the art that fills every corner of Rome, this travel guide is a trip in itself. Written in a deliciously irreverent tone, The Princess Guide To Rome (2014) covers all the fabulous stuff that’s so often missing from other travel guide books on Rome and Italy.

The first half is all the practical advice that a woman needs to plan a dream vacation to the Eternal City:

  • recommendations on where to stay, including the pros and cons of each neighbourhood in Rome
  • an extensive guide to the most magnificent Renaissance palaces and villas
  • a tour of Bernini’s Baroque fountains of Rome, including the Trevi Fountain, the Triton, and the Fountain of the Four Rivers
  • the loveliest Renaissance-style parks and gardens
  • the best art museums
  • favorite cafés for people-watching and lingering over a cappuccino
  • modern and vintage Italian fashion boutiques
  • the best espresso and gelato stops
  • small classes in authentic Italian cooking and wine tasting in the Rome, Lazio region
  • gourmet food shops for picnic supplies
  • day spas and salons
  • antique shopping and specialty artisan shops for unique made-in-Italy souvenirs
  • the prettiest rooftop terrace bars and restaurants with a view of Rome
  • exploring Rome by night
  • private tours by Vespa, à la Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday.
PLUS
  • where to find custom-made shoes, leather jackets, wallets, etc
  • how to get the most out of your budget
  • how to keep your bag safe
  • how to order a coffee in Rome like a local
  • a list of recommended private walking tour guides

The second half is filled with the stories behind the works of art. So often a foreign visitor cannot appreciate what’s right beneath her nose, and is left wondering what all the fuss is about. This section helps you to understand the symbolism and significance of what you’re looking at, along with the drama and occasional intrigue involved.

Many of the stories reference the great Renaissance and Baroque artists—Michelangelo, Raphael, Pietro da Cortona, Bernini, Borromini, Maderno, Sangallo, Della Porta—and the Roman families who were their patrons.

You get :

  • the inside scoop on the principal families that built the city during the Renaissance and Baroque
  • brief bios and backstories of their most famous (and infamous) members
  • a review of their Roman properties
  • a handy guide to each family’s coat of arms to help you identify their churches, fountains and palazzos as you stroll around the city
  • Recommended Extras: lists of the best Music, Movies, Apps, and Books on Rome to feed your dream before your trip, and sustain you when you come home

Written for the modern independent woman traveler who secretly harbours a princess fantasy (or two), with a special section for those on a shoestring budget, this book will save you time, money, and many headaches. Sure to motivate you (or a friend) to pack your bags and head straight to Italy.

The Princess Guide To Rome (2014) focuses on the beauty of Rome’s Renaissance and Baroque palaces, art, fountains and gardens, versus the ruins of Ancient Rome and the Vatican, which are amply covered by free online sources and general guidebooks such as the Rick Steves’ Rome and Italy series, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, etc.

Whether this is your first visit to the Eternal City, or you’re a confirmed Roma-holic, you are sure to find something new (or very old) to delight your senses.

“Solid logistical advice to minimize stress and delays, plus juicy stories about what you’re seeing to make the experience much more meaningful.”

Belinda Darcey was born and raised in Papua New Guinea by her Australian parents, who, perhaps rather foolishly, gave her a passport at age seven. They also encouraged her to study French, German and Latin, and dragged her and her siblings along on adventures through the jungles of the Pacific and Asia. To escape the heat, insects and long journeys by canoe and light aircraft, she immersed herself in historical novels set in Europe. While her sisters were busy getting a tan or fishing, she was hiding in the shade with her nose in a book, dreaming of castles and ball gowns and gilded coaches. The writing was on the wall.

Having discovered Art History in college, she saved her pennies and embarked on a first trip to Europe. Hopelessly smitten by the fairytale architecture and general fabulousness, she cast about for a way to afford more such trips on a twenty-something’s budget. Predictably, she ended up in the travel industry—first as a travel agent planning custom luxury itineraries, then as a wholesale tour operator agent—where she learned about the logistics of travel, how to travel like a princess on a peasant’s budget, and where to find a clean bathroom in a hurry in major cities such as Rome, Venice and Paris.

She started her series to help other women find the magic that is hidden (but still exists) in Europe’s most romantic cities. Her hope is that her books will help others avoid the disappointment that so often results from not having the time to do this kind of research. Between her annual migrations to Italy, she lives in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

I'm normally not a fan of travel books because, let's be honest, some of them can be really boring. When I saw this book geared towards women, I had to give it a try (especially since I had to do some research for my upcoming Roman holiday). I was not disappointed (or bored)! This book covers everything from shopping to eating to sightseeing (but it covers the best of it all). I took the author's suggestion and went shopping at vintage stores (Blue Goose was a favorite - the owner of the store was very friendly and helpful) and also made a stop at Tazza D'Oro for some amazing (!!) coffee. If you are looking for recommendations on the best spas, which souvenirs to bring home, which terrace to go to that has the best view of the Colosseum or simply want to learn more about the founding families of Rome, this is the book for you. The author also covers different neighborhoods of Rome and explains how to get around. This is a great book and I can't wait for the author to release guides for other cities.

Ladies, this is the book you have been waiting for about touring Rome.
It is a delightful and well researched romp through the back history of the eternal city.
It is an easy read that takes you from the airport to your stylish, but budget conscious hotel, right through the glorious palazzos, fountains, gourmet gelaterias and lux cocktail bars. The back story of the women's influence on the politics and architecture of Rome and the Vatican make it so much more compelling to the modern woman. Ms. Darcey redefines luxury travel with experiences that will involve all of your senses, giving you a true sense of life for women in Roma and still have a few euros for that Italian handbag. This book is pure pleasure.

Ms. Darcey has written a fun, informative, and sometimes cheeky travel guide for 'The Eternal City'.

Although the guide is written with a women's POV, as an adventurous male traveler, I appreciated all the tips, suggestions and recommendations.

This is easy to read, cross reference and use as your 'go-to' guide.

    Highly recommended!

    Grazie mille, Ms. Darcey?

    What's next?
    Peut-être Paris?

I travel a good bit and this book has wonderful insight to a fantastic Roman holiday. No one likes to be the obnoxious tourist but a tourist you will be, so you might as well be the best tourist you can be. This means eating like locals, taking a coffee, and walking to shops, whilst of course visiting all whatever fountains, museums and palaces you want to see.

I also appreciated the candor this book takes towards the necessary and unnecessary when it comes to what to bring or which areas of town to stay in or whether or not food is good or mediocre. Food is one of my favorite parts of traveling and if I can avoid the mediocre I will.

I also enjoyed the bits of history mixed in. It has more than other guide books but not so much it is overwhelming or dull.

I am visual person so it could use more pictures but there is a link to the Princess website for more visuals.

This guide book would be good for anyone who wants to visit Rome, woman or man.

This book is so good, I wish I had read it before doing a bus tour in Rome....I would have taken a Vespa instead and would no doubt have been swept off my feet by a sexy & sophisticated Italian man instead of just pinched on the bum by sleazy ones. I can't wait till belinda darcey writes more books. She has taken the lucky dip out of randomly choosing an area to stay in and deciding what to do, (& inevitably getting lost and having a bad time) I think if you do the things she suggests, Rome would be an amazing, unforgettable trip and you would come home with some great stories! Please write more :)

I cannot put into words how much I love this book. It is funny, informative and written as if your best traveling buddy wrote it. Her recommendation for the Vespa tour alone was well worth the price of the book.
