A Princess of Landover (Landover Series) MP3 CD – Unabridged, August 18, 2009

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 1,108 ratings

Ben Holiday, Chicago lawyer and mere mortal turned monarch of enchanted Landover, has grappled with scheming barons, fire-breathing beasts, diabolical conjurers, and extremely wicked witches. None of whom have prepared him for the most daunting of challengers―a teenage daughter. Sent by Ben and his beloved sylph bride, Willow, to an exclusive girls’ prep school, headstrong (and half-magical) Mistaya Holiday has found life in the natural world a less than perfect fit. And when her latest rebellious antics get her indefinitely suspended, she’s determined to resume her real education―learning sorcery from court wizard Questor Thews―whether her parents like it or not. But back home in Landover, Mistaya’s frustrated father is just as determined that the precocious princess learn some responsibility, and he declares her grounded until she successfully refurbishes the long-forsaken royal library. Mortified by the prospect of salvaging a king’s ransom in moldy books―and horrified by word that repulsive local nobleman Lord Laphroig seeks to marry her―Mistaya decides that the only way to run her own life is to run away from home. So begins an eventful odyssey peppered with a formidable dragon, recalcitrant gnomes, an inscrutable magic cat, a handsome librarian, a sinister sorcerer, and more than a few narrow escapes as fate draws Landover’s intrepid princess to the last place she expected to go, and into the thick of a mystery that will put her mettle to the test―and might bring the kingdom to its knees.

After fifteen years, Terry Brooks has finally returned to Landover, and after reading this great book, it was definitely worth the wait.

Mistaya Holiday, fifteen-year-old daughter of High Lord Ben Holiday, has been sent to Carrington school for girls to learn more about Ben's world. However, her experience there is less than pleasant and soon, she returns to Landover. Ben, angry and disappointed with his daughter, has suggested that she go to work restoring Libiris, Landover's library. Immediately mortified at the prospect of cleaning up the neglected library, Mistaya decides to seek refuge with the her grandfather, the River Master. To make matters even worse for Mistaya, she has discovered that Lord Laphroig, lord of Rhyndweir, has the intention of marrying her.

Upon reaching her grandfather, she finds out that he doesn't intend to offer her sanctuary from her parents. Instead, he sends her on her way. Disheartened, Mistaya decides to go to the last place her parents would think to look for her: Libiris. Once there, Mistaya meets Thom, a young boy indentured to His Eminance; the library's director. Thom's task includes cataloging and organizing the library's books along with the help of some other less-than-desirable creatures. Almost immediately, however, Mistaya senses a presence about Libiris and soon she discovers that these is much more to this old library than books; for Libiris has a magic all its own, and there are dark forces at work within her. Will Mistaya be able to discover the secret of Libiris before its too late and will she be forced to marry the strange Lord Laphroig?

I've been a fan of Terry Brooks for many years and I've read all of his books. I was delighted when I learned that he was writing a new Landover novel, and he didn't disappoint. This book is loaded with action and suspense, and the story keeps building throughout. I was also pleased that it appears that Brooks has left the door open for yet another Landover novel.

I give this fine book my highest recommendation. After reading it, you'll discover that it was worth waiting for.

Princess Mistaya gets kicked out of the earth school her parents chose for her and returns home. She battles her father over her future then runs away from his decisions about it, thinking she knows best. Then things get interesting. An evil lord wants to marry her, her grandfather sides with her father about her future and she takes refuge in the place her father wanted to put her. Here a forgotten wizard takes over and Mistaya tries to fight him. Up until this point Brooks has done a good job in presenting Mistaya's side, now he lets the wizard Crabit play as the all knowing, all scheming evil doer, brings in the evil lord suitor and a power fight develops and we get a development involving Nightshade which seems to presage future action. The early parts of book were written at a high level profiling of Mistaya but the later part is much more juvenile. Brooks seems to involve Edgewood Dirk and Haltwhistle both to lenthen the story and to get Mistaya out of a jam, also Strabo and her father's aids, Questor Thews and Abernathy for the same reason, not let Mistaya do it as he had done earlier. Still I thought it was a good read.

I have been a fan of Terry Brooks since my high school days. This book is a great read, and a beautiful addition to any library. If you are like me, once you have read a book you tend to never read it again. This is not the case with my Terry Brooks collection. I will re-read them in a few years after I have forgotten all the details (easy to do if your an avid reader like me and get the details all mixed up in other novels). I normally do not buy hardcover books as I get rid of novels after I have read them. Not so with Brooks. I buy them outright before ever reading and give them an honored place in my library. I can always count on an extraordinary story and entertaining capacity of the highest level. This is a continuation from the MAGIC KINGDOM FOR SALE SOLD series. I love how Brooks can incorporate past characters into recent stories.

I love Terry Brooks. This series is really quite funny. I think it is appropriate for teens as well since there is no sex or inappropriate stuff in there. This book is the 6th book in the series. It isn't absolutely necessary to read the others first since there are explanatory passages to keep things understable. So if you have to skip one because you don't have it, that is ok. But it is best to read them in order. Loved this series so much. Very light hearted. Full of action and adventure. Great for males or females.
