If you are looking for a happy ending for our lovers, than do not read this book for in this richly deep and profoundly beautiful story from KL Bone this does not happen. We do see love at its ultimate. We see the sacrifices made for those you love and the discovery of what love so deep is. We see two fated lovers in Erik and Liza and how they struggle. How they fight in their own way for one another and the sacrifices they make for each other. We see just how evil some people can be. We also get to see the myth of the roses come to reality and show us a little of what they desire. Not the whole picture because that would stop the story from coming to completion but some of their plan.
Erik is a knight of the Muir court and takes his vow seriously. He is a kindhearted man with integrity. When he is forced to do something against his inner compass it pains him greatly. To make up for it, he protect Liza with everything in him and soon this protection leads to trust, friendship and love. A love so deep that Liza and Erik fight so much and sacrifice for it.
Liza is sheltered for most of her life from the evil that her mother truly is. Her mother is so selfish and power hungry that she has others suffer greatly for her and to show them that she holds all the power. When her mother proposes a change in Liza’s status and that she marry Nicholi we start to see tides changing. It also sits in the back of your mind like a foreshadowing of events to come. Why? Suddenly the sweet beautiful and kindhearted Liza is kidnapped by Nicoli to be his wife. Only she is refusing and this is something that without her coming willingly into the marriage Nicholi cannot have. The prince is cruel to her and just downright nasty. His knights have a hard time being loyal to him as they watch day after day and year after year his treatment of Liza. There are three who are so kind to her it has your heart swell. Sebastian, Henrik and Erik treat her with compassion. They do what they can to help her. Erik and Liza fall in love and their story is like Romeo and Juliet in a way. They are star crossed lovers doomed to a fate because of greed and power. Their love is one that has you feel warm and fuzzy. The journey to their love wasn’t easy but shows the endurance love has. When found out, Erik makes the sacrifice to save Liza only to have this be turned around to harm them. Erik with his loyal friends find a way to keep Liza safe but also have her and Erik finally bind themselves to one another only to have to sacrifice once more. Their binding was just gorgeous. I love the roses response. The ending has you shocked and sad.
The story is in Liza and Erik’s thoughts and just has you intrigued and melt. The story is complex and engaging while also alluring and intriguing. So much politics and power hungry greed is seen in this book. We see the stories and love of great fairytales play out and also tragedy that has your heart weep. The characters truly draw you into the story as does the plot and intrigue that surrounds all in the tale. A great addictive read.
Tragic really! All of it. I literally cried my eyes out reading this book. Cried because Liza, the beloved Lorcan Princess believed to be dead was brutalized and tortured by a cruel prince believed to be a friend. Cried because we had to re-live the agony each character felt when she supposedly died (IN OUR MIND AGAIN.) Then I cried (yet again) while scanning through to see if I read the passages right because it didn't seem right. She wouldn't do that to sweet Liza. Not our Liza!! Then again the alternative wasn't just wouldn't do either! (Truly a George R. R. Martin ~ Why did they have to die moment??)
Then when I reached the last word, on the last page of the last chapter, I knew. I knew I would keep crying through to the next book and then to the very LAST book. The mere knowledge of what must be done NOW. WHAT MARA MUST DO!!! What the next book will do to die-hard fans will be catastrophic! KL Bone will have to hand out lollipops to pacify our inner child and band-aids for our boo-boos.
Bone's writing has flourished. She has mastered the art of storytelling ten folds and has taken her fans to new heights. There were no roller coaster rides here; she commanded the feels of a full-blown dragon flight!!
My Nerd Girl hat to you, KL Bone!! If I could give you ten stars, they would be yours! Thank you for a fantastic ride!!!

When I opened to the first page, my heat lept. I was beyond excited. Long-time fan and friend of Kristin’s, I saw the updates on her page. The weee tantalizing, intriguing, and down right excited my eye balls for the next installment! What they didn’t do was give warning to the content.
As I read on, I was hooked. I literally could not take my eyes away. I say, motionless at some scenes wondering, “did that really just happen?” I can’t tell you how many times I was in tears or shouting “hoorah” at my phone [Kindle App] as I read on. My heart clenched and stopped beating! My muscles would refuse to work as I sat in fear.
Folks, this one is not for the weak hearted. It does require a crap ton of tissues, a punching bag, and a lot of chocolate ice cream! May you enjoy this installment as much as I did! But you can’t say you weren’t warned :)!
I read this book in a day...because I am a huge fan of the Black Rose series. This book was heartwrenching but definitely necessary in the overall story of Mara and Edward. I can't believe it actually really happened that way, but I'm glad that Liza got to have some happiness for whatever brief amount of time that was. Reading this story was a little like reading Romeo and Juliet, you know how it will end because everyone knows they are already gone, it's just the story of how they got there. ***Sigh*** I almost put this book off longer because I knew it was going to be hard. Did I love it, yes? Do I wish for happy endings always, YES! I LOVE ERIK!
Anyway, still loved KL Bone's writing, characters and overall plot, I just hated that this sad tale had to be as sad as it was. I want more though, I can't wait for Daughters of the Rose!
5 stars :)
