Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-8?Middle school students think of vocabulary as a dry, tedious subject full of repetitious drills. These tapes, however, use humor and relevant situations to introduce 120 new and useful words. Hosts Fred and Ginger act as commentators and facilitators as an obviously fictional story about two middle schoolers is told in several chapters. The students are banished from Bestville because they do not excel at anything and are sentenced to live at Mediocre Mountain. On the way there, they encounter a series of outlandish adventures which provide opportunities to employ a variety of vocabulary words. Most of the selected words are intriguing and potentially useful, such as pithy, abdicate, and cavort. Each chapter is acted out using a variety of voices with audio cues such as horns or clanks to indicate when a vocabulary word is used. With emphasis on using contextual clues to gain understanding, Fred and Ginger then review the chapter and discuss and define (but don't spell) each highlighted word. This format allows easy classroom use, since each chapter could be listened to on a different day. Although the humor is sometimes a bit corny and at times too sophisticated for the intended audience, this is a worthwhile and painless way to spice up students' limited vocabularies.?Susan McCaffrey, Sturgis Middle School, MI
