For years, the Fuel headlamp has been a staple in the outdoor lighting industry. With an increased demand for red lighting to preserve night vision, we listened, and the Fred was born. Utilizing the exact same ergonimc and lightweight styling of the Fuel, the Fred enables you to preserve night vision with the substitution of a Red LED for one of the white. The Fred will always turn on in the low mode of the Red LED, so you never have to accidently blind yourself or any other people. To eneable the three white LEDs, just hold the button down for 1.5 seconds.

These were PERFECT for nursery checks at night! They're small, seem well built, are comfortable to wear, and batteries go a long way in them.
However, the battery latch isn't very designed and will almost certainly fail over time. For me these latches seemed to all go after about a year and a half ... at which point the plastic became just a bit too brittle and a battery change (no matter how careful) resulted in a broken latch. I suspect most of the 5 star reviewers wrote their reviews having owned these for less time than that.
Note that my Fred headlamps still work (with the battery doors held shut by rubber bands) and they're still nice little headlamps. But 3 stars for the questionable latch design and/or degrading plastic Princeton Tec used.
The true testament to this lamp's reliability was discovered on my last trip. The headlamp was lost on a camping trip when thunderstorms and flash floods tore through camp. After about 2 weeks and several more thunderstorms, I returned to the campsite hoping to find the lamp. Lo and behold, the lamp was a short distance away from the campsite. After cleaning the mud and debris off the lamp, it functioned flawlessly.
Overall, this lamp is hard to beat. The pricepoint makes it more than affordable. The batteries are readily available, should you possibly need to change them out. The lamp is durable and dependable. I haven't tried any other competitors because I haven't needed to. It'll be hard to be disappointed with this lamp.
