Product Description

For years, the Fuel headlamp has been a staple in the outdoor lighting industry. With an increased demand for red lighting to preserve night vision, we listened, and the Fred was born. Utilizing the exact same ergonimc and lightweight styling of the Fuel, the Fred enables you to preserve night vision with the substitution of a Red LED for one of the white. The Fred will always turn on in the low mode of the Red LED, so you never have to accidently blind yourself or any other people. To eneable the three white LEDs, just hold the button down for 1.5 seconds.

I've favored red headlamps rather than flashlights for use during astronomy and astrophotography for many years -- so many that I used to make my own before they became commercially available. I can categorically state that this is the finest of the many that I've tried. It always comes on in the low-power red mode, and never cycles through white while turning it on or off. White is activated simply by holding the button down for two seconds when first powering it on. After the light has been on for two seconds (in either red or white mode), the next press always turns it off. The dim red setting, the default, provides sufficient light without being too bright. All of the modes are useful, and the angle is easy to adjust. I found the button to be simple, convenient, and easy to use. I am very happy with this purchase -- enough so that I felt it was the time to post a review, which I do infrequently. Enjoy!

Very light, compact and well built, comparing to similar, but cheaper products you can buy from Home Depot. I barely can feel "it is there", when I put it on. This headlamp turned out to be surprisingly useful, perhaps, one of the most useful things I got in this price range this year! I bought it mostly to use as 1) a night red light to avoid blinding myself; 2) a reading light; 3) jogging when it is dark. It is really great for all of these. For 1), an added bonus was this light is useful when putting on contact lenses in the dark (those who use them know the eyes can be very sensitive to this procedure when you are sleep deprived). The direction of the light is fully adjustable (the lowest down is achieved with one of 2 possibe orienations). The band around the head is comfortable after I took time to adjust it. The battery compartment is easy to open with a tool included on the band buckle (someone complained it is hard to open - apparently without reading the manual). You can also use a screwdriver or coin to prop open the cover. The red light (2 settings) and white light (2 settings) are dim or bright enough for most tasks. It takes a little practice to learn how to choose a specific setting (red/white/dim/bright), but it is really easy to turn on red dim or white dim and power off with one push. The absolute longest time you can use this headlight continuosly (on red dim setting) with one battery set is rated for about 8 days (hopefully you won't find youreself in the situation for such a need). The light is rated as waterproof. I do not know for how long the head band will last upon aging, that was my only concern. No problem after 6 months. I compared this headlamp to one of those that are only sold at Home Depot: those could be brighter, but usually heavier.Read more ›

The black Fred headlamp is NOT as pictured on Amazon! The black headlamp is exactly the same size, shape, and weight as the other colors. The only differences are the color and it is cheaper than some of the other colors. Since I just received this unit today, I cannot say much about it's performance, but I wanted a small headlamp that provides red or white light, and it looks like the Fred will meet my needs perfectly. The Fred offers two brightness levels of red light, and two brightness levels of white light. There is no flashing mode for either red or white light. The unit always turns on in red mode so that you do not lose your night vision or blind other people. If you want to see a picture of the black Princeton Tec Fred Headlamp, go to the manufacturer's website.

I've had this head lamp for about a week and am very pleased with it so far. It is absolutely perfect for my needs. I especially like how when you turn it on it goes directly to the red low beam light. You don't even have to cycle through the white lights to turn it off. If you want the white light you just have to hold the button in for a few seconds. Super smart technology, super lightweight, super compact, love the color options. Another awesome surprise was that it's made in the U.S.A.! The only negative thing I might say about it so far is that the battery cartridge is hard to open, but otherwise it's perfect!! A+

Best thing about this light:
When you turn the light on it is immediately in the dim red mode, then you hit the button again to get the bright red mode. If you want white then you press and hold the power button to get dim white and press again to get bright white.

With other brands (I'm talking to you Petzl and Black Diamond!) the unit turns on first to the bright-white, retina-scorching mode, then you have to dim the light to a less jarring level - but when you are out in the tranquil pitch-black wilderness the peace has already been burned out of your friend's eyes so there is no point in turning the light down. With some brands you can select (through a silly combo of long or short presses of the single power button) weather you want red or white operation, but then you have to remember what it was etc.

The operation of this light is stupid easy, which is totally what you want when your hands are frozen into blocks of ice and your brain stopped working 15 miles ago. I gave away my headlamp made by some other company after I got one of these! (I gave it to a guy I'm never going to go camping with so I know he won't blind me with its stupid operation on some starless night some place)
