Editorial Reviews

Rick Latimer (Belushi), a screw-up teacher at a white bread high school, is presented with an ultimatum by the school board: find a new employer or become the principal of the district's most troublesome high school. He becomes the no-nonsense principal at a school populated by violent gangs, drug dealers, and other delinquents and rules with an iron fist.

In this wonderful reworking of Hawks' Rio Bravo, Belushi takes on both the role of the sheriff and of the drunk. This is the best of all of the 1980s faculty vs. evil student movies. Belushi towers in this film, giving a wondeful leading man performance which should have forever brought him out from under his brother's shadow. The film, like a lot of Hawks films, has the main characters trapped in a building and having to fight their ways out. Morales, Gosset and Rae Dawn give strong support. Though director's Cain's Young Guns was his most popular film on the decade, this was clearly his best.

This is one of if not the best of James Belushi's movies. I love watching the 'teacher fix a school' kind of movie like The Substitute, Dangerous minds, Lean on Me because I relate to the difficult task a teacher or administrator is charged with in U.S. school systems. The Principal does utilize some of the typical cliche's such as the 'main man bad guy' or 'out of control students' but it's done in such a way it's fun to watch. Both Lou Gossett jr. and Rae Dawn Chong give excellent supporting roll performances. The Principal is about a teacher who goes and has gone through some tough personal battles (ex wife he still loves, turns to drink, etc) and it treats us to an inside look at a man who's just trying to get through and do his job. He's (belushi), offerred the job as Principal at a school (Surprise!) and the rest of the movie follows him through his, the school, the students, and faculty's learning process. In many ways The Principal is the best of the 4 or 5 good 'teacher movies' out there.

This is one of those very underrated films, this does what Dangerous Minds does but much better. James Belushi and Louis Gossett Jr make a great duo and JJ Cohen as White Zac is also very well casted(he is nothing like the parts he plays). unfortunately the film has only been released in Bare Bones Full Screen, so telling you to avoid this release wouldn't be fair, but if this film is ever released in Widescreen go for it. I do hope a Special Edition would be made someday, but my signed copy will stay in my collection

I recall watching this movie 3 times in my life before finnaly putting up money to buy it.

This movie is not a typical 80's but is a drama in away and a action flick in a way but it keeps you watching.

The movie is your typical run down druken teacher sent to a run down typical gang infested school to be the principal but what is not typical is how two words "No More!" Echo and it seems to drive the line between those who want to try and those who want to hurt.

This movie has a great cast including the "Gang" members and when all is said and done your cheering for the "Good Guys" To beat "The Bad Guys" and in all it end's with "No more".

This movie dose have alot of cursing, some strong Violence, and some images that would disturbe the children it earns it's R rating. But for us adults check it out you don't offten get to see this stuff now days...

One of Belushi's best roles. Picked to turnaround a school (as principal) infested with violence and drugs, Belushi was great in getting the school under control after getting rid of the main culprit. Another good movie I recommend. First saw it on TV years ago.

We had this for many years on VHS and I was glad to find it on dvd to replace the one in our library as we no longer have VHS player. The story is rough and theme mature at times but these things do happen and it is part of the story. The message is good. Welcome addition to our video library.

Great movie. James Belushi is very good in it. I think it is probably the best of his dramatic career. There's some funny stuff to which is Belushi's forte but he is pretty good at the gritty stuff too!

Life messages don't get no better than this movie...Jim Belushi hits this movie in a big way for the better..He gets a job as a Principal at this run down drug infested high school..Gets the student's to believing in there self...That they can do it.If they want too..And some do.And some don't.But it goes to show you what a student can do no matter where or what they are in life.Or where they come from..It touched me it really did..Wish our Schools around my home here had Principal's that cared like in this movie.Great message, hope, and human compassion here in the movie. The only thing that they could have left out is the language. But other than that it was great.Thank You,God-Bless and take care.Have a good day in our Lord Jesus-Christ.Amen and Amen
