"We used to use Case and Fair's text. Mankiw seems to be a better text because it actually follows through with giving applications to what he includes in the book. For example, there is much better material in Mankiw about consumer surplus, producer surplus, government policies and interventions in the market."

About the Author

N. Gregory Mankiw is Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics at Harvard University. He studied economics at Princeton University and MIT. Dr. Mankiw is a prolific writer and a regular participant in academic and policy debates. His research includes work on price adjustment, consumer behavior, financial markets, monetary and fiscal policy, and economic growth. His published articles have appeared in academic journals, such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, and Quarterly Journal of Economics, and in more widely accessible forums, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and Fortune. Dr. Mankiw has been a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, an adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Congressional Budget Office, and a member of the ETS test development committee for the advanced placement exam in economics. From 2003 to 2005, he served as chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers.

Its a pretty good read

Its a pretty good read, simple, but can be boring if you're not keeping up with the concepts, it might seem like gibberish at that point. But, every chapter mostly refers back to the first 8 chapters or so and every chapter after that is really easy to understand because the author re-explains things and does a nice job to help you understand the dynamics and to speak and understand the language of economics which always seemed so foreign to me with interest, taxes, GDP, medicare, net worth, and all this jazz, but it makes more sense to me now.
I took a 6 week class so I only wish I had the time to soak it in much more

I took microeconomics from one of Greg's former colleagues at UW-Madison and this book is very unbiased, doesn't tell you how to form your normative views, and is extremely user friendly. I am an engineer and took this class for fun my last semester and it was probably the most interesting class I ever took in college.

It's known for being the best formal introduction to economics. It combines both Mankiw's Principles of Microeconomics and Principles of Macroeconomics into one book without trimming any content. This edition is mostly the same as the newer editions that I've briefly seen.
