I was elated to see that Dr. Harvey had finally chosen to codify and publish the ten leadership principles that have guided his unique approach to leadership that we now refer to as the “Harvey Leadership Model.” I served for ten years at Hampton University in successive deanships and then as the vice president for planning and dean of the Graduate College. Under Harvey’s leadership Hampton was a driven, hard-charging institution. Those committed to the work enjoyed strong support, deep relationships, intense teamwork and a brand that would animate each of us long after our time at Hampton University. That brand was infused with these Principles of Leadership and the knowledge of our collective drive to blaze new trails, to compete openly with any institution and to “dream no small dreams.” Many of us in leadership roles received solid professional development, mentoring and advocacy. The environment also led each of us to provide professional development, mentoring and advocacy for those in our purview in turn. As a consequence, a further understanding of these principles demonstrates that we organically engaged in positional succession planning.
I have found myself applying these principles in every subsequent position and endeavor, including especially two university presidencies in which the application of strong inclusive leadership were necessary for institutional transformation. In my current work as a Senior Fellow for AGB Institutional Strategies, I find myself assessing leadership in client institutions on the basis of these same principles of the Harvey Leadership Model.
I attribute my success as a University President to the many lessons learned over 23 years of being mentored by him. Needless to say, his sound “principles of leadership”, when systematically and consistently applied, do work, producing dividends for the institution and its leadership. Dr. Harvey has been described in many ways: a “Teaching President”, the “Presidents’ President”, and even the “Dean of University Presidents.” The ten principles and his commitment to building a highly successful educational enterprise, Hampton University, is proof positive that his principles of successful leadership will serve well in bringing the same kinds of success to other institutions.”
