The 5 Principles of Parenting: Your Essential Guide to Raising Good Humans Hardcover – January 23, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
Let go of perfect and become a transformative, positive influence in a child’s life while creating your own definition of success from developmental psychologist and podcaster Dr. Aliza Pressman.
“My go-to for how we all raise good humans, including ourselves!” —Drew Barrymore
In the age of high-pressure parenting, when so many of us feel like we’ve got to get everything exactly right the first time, Dr. Aliza Pressman is the compassionate, reassuring expert we all need—and the one whose advice we can all use. Already beloved by listeners of hit podcast, Raising Good Humans, Dr. Pressman distills it all with a handful of strategies every parent can use to get things right often enough: Relationship, Reflection, Regulation, Rules, and Repair.
The 5 Principles of Parenting doesn’t presume to tell you how to parent with “my way is right” advice because the science is clear: There’s no one “right” way to raise good humans. No matter how you were raised, how your coparent behaves, or how your kids have been parented up until now, you can start using The 5 Principles of Parenting to chart a manageable course for raising good humans that’s aligned with your own values and with your children’s unique temperaments. Whether you're in the trenches with a toddler or a tween (because spoiler alert: the tantrums of childhood mirror the tantrums of adolescence), it’s never too late to learn to use these 5 principles to reparent yourself and help your kids build the resilience they need to thrive. Through practice and normalizing imperfection, along the way you’ll discover the person you’re ultimately raising is yourself. By becoming more intentional people, we become better parents. By becoming better parents, we become better people. Let’s get started.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2024I am a big fan of Dr Aliza. I listen to her podcast regularly, and recently just finished the 5 principles of parenting. It is such a brilliant book- filled with research backed guidance to help you understand the why in her gentle parenting recommendations. What is particularly nice about this book- is there is no right or wrong way to parent. Dr Aliza provides you with the data from many different experts which helps you to understand children better. With questionnaires throughout the book, you are able to assess what type of child you have and what type of parent you are. She also encourages you to understand what sets off your “alarm system” so that you are more in touch with yourself -which ultimately helps you parent from a more emotionally regulated place. Dr Aliza is brilliant, thoughtful and truly a gifted educator. I had the privilege of speaking to her once and she is just a very special person. She is empathetic, attentive and eager to understand you and your kids. This is a MUST read. I truly can’t recommend it enough.

I have listen to the audio book (I'm listening it for the 2nd time now) and I ordered the hard copy also. I will go with my husband chapter by chapter to make sure we are on the same page and be great models for our children.
I love that the tips are meeting the parents where they are and the book it is written in a non judgemental tone and based on current research.
This would be a great gift for any parent.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2024As someone who is a big fan of Dr. Dan’s Siegel’s work, I was excited to come across this book. In her book, Dr. Pressman applies sound research findings and her perspective to form the 5 Principles of Parenting in an approachable and practical way. The 5 principles that are defined the book are relationship, reflection, regulation, rules, and repair. Each principal is presented in a thoughtful and accessible way. Unlike other books that focus on either/or approaches, the author provides a lot of context and nuance and not following a specific script. I hope that Dr. Pressman continues to write and contribute to developmental psychology, I would love for her next book to focus more adolescents.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2024I love Dr Aliza’s podcast and this book is AMAZING! I actually did the audible version, then decided after listening to the book, I knew I needed a hard copy. Plan to back and read again on my own with a highlighter- post notes and ear tag all the things! I have a toddler and then 10 yr old and 14 yr old! So this explains and is relevant for all parents no matter the age of your kids.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2024I’ve been patiently waiting for the publication of Dr. Aliza’s book, and it did not disappoint. As a mother of three boys, I am constantly yearning for as much information I can gather on how to raise good humans. This book encompasses the main focus points on regulating ourselves, building relationships with our kids, learning to have fun, repairing ruptures - all while making us feel competent and confident in ourselves. Her podcast, Raising Good Humans, is also an incredible resource for parents! I have been following her for years, and I recommend her work to all of the parents I meet!

I recently picked up The 5 Principles of Parenting, and it’s been such a rewarding experience! As someone who loves learning about child development, I found this book to be both fun and deeply insightful.
The principles are easy to understand and apply, making it a practical guide for anyone wanting to be the best parent they can be. The stories shared throughout are relatable and often brought a smile to my face (and even a few tears!).
What I appreciate most is how the book highlights the importance of connection and empathy. It really encourages you to build strong relationships with your kids, which is so crucial.

Ich habe das Buch als ebook und in Hardcopy. Brauchte es einfach zweimal in meinem Leben. Ich finde es super hilfreich und endlich ein Buch, dass einem meinungsfrei hilft langfristig seine Kinder groß zu ziehen.
