If you are interested in Yacht or sailboat design, you will get an aweful lot of this book. Seriously you can go from a newbie to someone who somewhat knows what they are talking about just by going through this whole book. We used it in my Naval Architect and Marine Engineering Sailing design class at the University of Michigan, and I had a great professor, so you KNOW this is THE book to get.

I have designed and built a 26 foot sloop starting 23 years ago as an amateur and helped others to complete their boats after.Right now I`m building a sailing dinghy by my own design. All this years I have compiled informations about yacht design and building technics and their evolution through the time. It`s a hobby for me but many times I felt to much uncertainty about some aspects in designing sailboats. This book is excellent to relieve you of many uncertainties by brief an well informed discussion of various aspects of yact design. The computational part is more than helpful. You won`t find informations about wing masts ,wide beam aft tendencies, but classical features are well and thouroughly discussed.

It's a good book with a lot of useful information well presented.
A little lacking on modern planing hulls.
It would be great if an updated edition was considered that could include CFD examples?

If you need a book that goes deep in the design analysis, this is the one. The authors should do one of that more specific for power boats, not that they don't discuss about it, but they are more detailed about sailboat.

Bought this book 2 years ago out for curiosity, turned out it was used in a yacht design class at my university (course which I have attended, within my naval architecture graduation). Anyway lets say what I think about it:
Very extensive, comprehends all the main aspects of yacht desing.
Ideal for begginers, with graduation on Naval architecture or amateurs who love the subject and want to know more about it, or even maybe build something in their garages.
Conslusion, It's worth the money if you're interested in yacht design.

Was surprised to find some typos, and a few incorrect descriptions, but otherwise a great book. Ideal for the yachtsman who wants to understand the theory and maybe even dabble in design.

An Excellent Overview of Yacht Design
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 1, 2010Verified Purchase
For years I have looked for a book that took the reader through the entire process of sailing yacht design, from concept, thro' realisation, to the practicalities of build and fit out, and this is the best yet!
I don't know why I'd either not come across it before, or had chosen to ignore it, but having now purchased this book, it really is as good as the reviews say it is! Sure, by virtue of it's all encompassing nature, it cannot go into all the minutiae of the the subject, but it does give the reader an excellent grounding in all the main principles that would then enable the would be designer to research those areas of special interest with the benefit of a greater focus.

A great book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 26, 2012Verified Purchase
An up to date book on yacht design, easy to read and well presented with good diagrams and clear explanation. A fine balance between understandable text and mathematical formula for doing the work, is beautifully achieved. Refreshingly free from bias or opinion it is an excellent basis for assessing an existing design or starting from scratch. The focus is strictly modern-day, regular cruising yachts so those with interests in rigs other than the bermudan sloop and materials other than fiberglass will have to supplement their knowledge elsewhere. Even then, it remains essential reading.

A very thorough tour off yacht design. Here are no fancy photos of smart yacht, but a series of explanations and formulas to take into consideration when designing, rebuilding or looking at new designs of yachts. Some of the content is very complicated and some of it is more straightforward

Excellent book to understand yacht design

This book reminds me of the similar aircraft design principles classics. This is an excellent way for an aerospace engineer to get needed insight to sailing yacht design. I highly recommend this book
