The Printrbot Simple 2014 fully assembled 3D printer has an open platform with an aluminum print bed and a frame constructed of machined aluminum and laser-cut birch wood for fabricating objects to maximum dimensions of 4 x 4 x 4 inches/100 x 100 x 100 mm (H x W x D) using PLA (polylactic acid) thermoplastic filament. The printer has a vertical resolution of 100 microns (0.10 mm) and comes with a direct drive 6061 aluminum extruder with a shrouded cooling fan, and an Ubis hot end that accepts 1.75 mm PLA filament. The unheated 6061 aluminum print bed has a matte finish and provides a level build surface that will not warp. The printer is commanded through the provided micro USB cable using G-code numerical control instructions. An SD memory card slot can store G-code instructions on a memory card (sold separately) for operation without a connection to a computer. It can be used with 3D printer management software packages (sold separately). The frame is made of laser-cut birch wood. Machined aluminum axis rods with linear bearings and injection molded gears help ensure precise movement. The size 17 stepper motors meet the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) standard ICS 16-2001. The printer comes with a sample spool of PLA filament.

3D printers fabricate physical objects directly from computer-aided-design (CAD) data sources. Objects created by additive manufacturing are built by dispensing successive thin layers of molten material onto a moving platform base from a robotic extruder nozzle. The material is most commonly a thermoplastic or HDPE (high-density polyethylene) filament.
Printrbot manufactures desktop 3D printers and accessories. The company is headquartered in Lincoln, CA.

I am very happy to have purchased the prebuilt model. I ordered the kit, and then I did my setup homework. Everything you need to know is either on the printrbot website, or you tube. I setup my computer per the internet before the unit arrived. Once it arrived I removed the shipping plate. I looked everything over. I plugged the unit in. And viola I was making my first print within 30 min of opening up the box.
Build quality is very good for the money spent. This printrbot is quite a value.
Make sure you research this item prior to purchase and make sure it meets your needs. So if you are looking to do a little DIY, ok with a 4"x4"x4" print area, this is the kit for you..
It shipped quickly and is packaged well. Some note that you have to remove a piece of plywood that is put in there for support during shipping would be nice. I didn't notice it until after I was troubleshooting why it wouldn't move. It arrives with a test piece still stuck to the printer bed and more filament than I expected. You could probably get away with not buying a spool right away.
The recommended software (Repetier and Slic3r) work really well. Sometimes I have issues connecting but pushing the reset button on the PB usually fixes this.
I did have some hardware problems:
The power supply went belly up after just a few days of use. They sent me a new one. The shipping could have been faster considering it came from less than 100 miles away but it did show up.
The nozzle started leaking so they sent me an entirely new hot end. It is probably cheaper/better for them to do that than walk newbies through taking it off, cleaning it, and reassembling.
I kept getting filament jams where it enters the ceramic part of the hot end. Printrbot support said it was likely caused buy the motor getting too hot, heating the filament which made it too flexible and to turn the current down on the extruder. It was set at about a 4-10 clock position and I turned it down about 1 hour to 3/9.Read more ›
Printrbot has offered increasingly excellent customer support in the past 6 months, and they've always been extremely responsive and kind with me. I can't speak for the one star reviewer because he apparently has had a poor experience, but he does NOT speak for the majority of Simple owners and Printrbot customers.
This is a value 3D printer. High quality from an awesome company. If you just look at their Twitter account you'll get a sense of the value of customers and the high level of support offered. If you're wondering where to start, this is a great place.
Overall I have been happy with it, but be aware that issues will arise. I do think that having issues so close to having purchased it and only printing a handful of things doesn't mean its a great buy, but it is a decent 3d printer especially for the price. So if you are looking for a cheap introductory 3D printr then this is a good buy, but if you want a long term high volume printer look elsewhere.
Thanks for this product! I'm geeking out man!
