Color alchemy was a rare talent that usually manifested itself when children were around the elementary age. I loved this element to the story. It is based on the seven chakra centers, believed to be physic energy centers, in or around the spinal column. A color alchemist in this world can separate colors down to the primary sources and utilize the color for its intended purpose. An example would be the color green from plants could be used as a healing agent. Color alchemy was rare but the most sought after alchemists were the ones who would be able to separate and utilize the colors red, white, and black.
Jessa Loxley was one of those rare color alchemists. So rare, even she was unaware of her abilities until one fateful night at her ballet recital. Once her magic was discovered she was kept as a virtual prisoner by the king and forced to train under the tutelage of Prince Lucas. Separated from everyone she had ever known and thrown into a world of color guardians where she was despised and berated, Jessa longed for her life before she manifested her talent.
Soon Jessa learned that what she understood to be true as a citizen was not the same truth that she is being told as an alchemist. She quickly became aware that as a citizen she was deceived for political purposes and that there was something more sinister than she could have ever imagined happening in her very own kingdom. As she learned more about her abilities and the motivations of others she began to uncover a truth that gave her a new purpose in life.
Prism has many of elements that are easily recognized as young adult but it also has amazing world building, magical realism, and only a little of the YA angst. The characters are all fleshed out, memorable, and never what you expect them to be. There is a romance element but it is more of a deep yearning feel. Overall, Prism was a fun and magical read that kept me hanging on with its fast-paced action and political subterfuge.
This review is based on a complimentary book I received from Book Review 22. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.
So first, it's definitely a new take on magic, which I was skeptical of, but after finishing the book I loved the premise of color alchemy. This is definitely a breath of fresh air in terms of originality.
My only critique is that I did feel as though things fell into place very neatly and some of it was unrealistic, but it was a minor issue and I wouldn't mention it but I feel as though for some people that's s turn off.
Overall, I say give it a shot! This is a debut author and I think she really surpassed my expectations when it comes to "first" books.
This is a part of a series and I can't wait for the next one to come out!
Well told and with interesting characters, any lover of YA literature will enjoy this co!ourful tale.
