If you're a professional artist working with colored pencils, and you want to cover a large drawing surface efficiently with the reputed color payoff and consistency of the Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils, this set is for you! The Prismacolor Art Stix measure 3 ¼”x1/4”x1/4” each and come in packs of 12, 24, 36 and 48 colors. The Art Stix can also be used by non-professionals who want to explore various art media.
Color Payoff and Texture
As advertised, the Prismacolor Art Stix are buttery smooth on application and have a rich color laydown, being made of the same material as the core of the much-favored softcore pencil range. The absence of a wood casing around the sticks allows you to cover large surface areas with intense color. I am a design major in college and I often want to do large portraits/ landscapes in colored pencil. I find that these sticks are very useful for such work. The strokes that you get with the Art Stix are broad and intense. Though you could sharpen these for finer details, they are best used in conjunction with the original colored pencils for details. I personally enjoy using the Art Stix, as they look like soft pastels in appearance but have the consistency of colored pencils. The color can transfer to your hands and any surface you would leave these sticks on, so take the necessary steps to prevent a mess in your workspace and on your drawing surface.
There are fewer colors in this set when compared to the 150 colors available in the softcore pencil range, which means that you would have to spend more time blending various colors to get the desired effect. The 48 - color pack has a good selection of blues and greens, but it would be great to have more colors like Black Cherry (PC1078) Black Grape (PC996) and Black Raspberry (PC1096) which are excellent alternatives to plain black for darker areas. I am glad that the set includes my all-time favorites Tuscan Red (PC 937/ AS 1937) and Indigo Blue (PC901/ AS1901). For me, the ideal situation would be to have all 150 colors available as Art Stix, since I do a lot of work with colored pencil!
The Art Stix cost more than a standard colored pencil set with the same number of colors, which is understandable as each stick contains a lot more of the color core, without the wood. The set is very reasonably priced for the amount of product that you are getting. I think that if you are a lover of the softcore pencil, like me, you would enjoy experimenting with this set and open up new possibilities for your colored pencil artwork.
Packaging and Presentation
The box has a similar look and layout to the other products in the Prismacolor range, and each stick is encased in its own cavity within the box, which protects it from breakage. The package arrived from Amazon in excellent condition, and I was happy to see that all the sticks were intact. The colors are not marked with their numbers, so it takes some guessing to figure out which color is which. It is not too much of a hassle due to the small range of colors.
I am confident that the Prismacolor Art Stix are worth the investment for serious colored pencil artists and anyone interested in exploring art media. This product is of high quality and will save you a lot of time and effort when undertaking large colored pencil projects.
I started with prismacolor pencils (which is how I learned their color system), then decided to get art stix for larger areas. These are easy to use and the colors are vibrant. They don't get all over your hands.
The prismacolor pencils have colorless blender pencils available. These do too - in stick form. As far as I can tell, they're all made of the same thing, they're just different shapes. There arent any blenders in the box - you have to buy them separately.
It IS an issue, as others have mentioned, that these don't come labelled and the box is not labelled either. It's impossible to figure out which color is which unless you own at least the Prisma 48 set and compare them. The reds and the browns contain colors that are quite close to each other in some cases.
I got the largest set, which is the 48 and it is large enough for my purposes. I do also own the Prisma 150, in the pencils, but I wouldn't use more than the 48 colors here for backgrounds. Do be aware that about 15 of these 48 colors are very fugitive, if you care about such things. You can go on the Prisma website to check which colors will not last long.

I had the 2 freebies in the 120 pencil set when I first tried them and was impressed. they are smooth, cover evenly over a large area and work brilliantly on toothed paper (esp acrylic paper), giving a canvas looking effect. I held out on buying more at the time of buying my 120 pencil set, only because these were extremely expensive at the time (about £50 or so for the 24 set). To find all 48 brand new, sealed, in perfect condition on arrival (with free prime postage too) was nothing short of an absolute steal.
Haven't got anything bad to say about them at all, I can't even complain about sparse packaging because they were ordered with other things and came inside a larger box.
Happy customer here.
an american product, they are worth the wait, giving me professional results, as crayons won't cut it for me , this product will, and blend, mix and smooth (with a little elbow grease) well, and long lasting. Recommended!!!!
