The beginning was great; I enjoyed the characters and found their experiences believable. By the middle I was like ...Huh... and by the end I was thinking, are you kidding me? Three books and I don't feel like we have really got to the point yet. Three stories of three different groups all over the same general time period. This could have been intertwined into one long book rather than 3 short.
There were some editing issues but they were fairly minor.
Overall, I did enjoy Prisoner and Survivor (even though I was disappointed) but I found it lacked the urgency and desperation of the first two entries and I missed that aspect. It is a definite read if you have been following this series.
I hope the author makes his 4th (and I believe final)book almost as long as these three combined.
A little pimp here for the author - you should check out his site at latenightbooks.com and become a fan on facebook - interesting tidbits to be found :) (and no, i dont know him but his site is interesting)
Pretty good book but they are short not very long and there are a TON of loose threads lying around. There are now three books in this series and I hope that the author finally has the set up completed. If there are more characters to bring in I would think that would become almost un-manageable for the author to keep up with unless he had a ton of notes. I do not take notes in my book reading so I know it would get confusing. I gave this 4 instead of 3 stars because I like the story and want to give the author the benefit of the doubt for now.....
Overall I would say it felt like an 8th grader wrote the book. There was really no development of story and characters, no exciting ending - it just trailed off. Quite honestly if I had to read, "in about two or three hours," or "about two or three minutes later" I was going to toss my kindle out the window. Talk about lack of creativity there. Apparently they let just anyone write books anymore. I gave it two stars just for the zombies because I love the zombies. Without the zombies it would be zero stars.
"Downloading books is easy."
Downloading books is easy, I mused to myself.
In sentence 1 I'm speaking out loud. In sentence 2 I'm thinking to myself. It's a minor thing in the grand scheme of things but it's an irritating aspect to the book when you WANT to enjoy the story and the character.
Another flaw I noticed was high school interactions between the characters. The main character is supposed to be this cold blooded killer but he has this other survivor tag along with no qualms? Now I can see the logic behind strength in numbers but when the female starts balking at what he wanted, why didn't he cut and run? Also, he giggles. It's kind of wierd to read about a tough male character serial killer "giggling".
My biggest problem? The voices in the character's head. There seemed to be no explanation and no lead-up to it. I believe the character says at one point "the voices are telling me to go west". Ummm, huh? What just happened???
This book sounded suspiciously like LZR 1143 which had a very similar premise (except it came out before this book). An incarcerated character with a dead wife who hears voices. Except that book was well write and cohesive.
