It is about a secluded Island that appears to be a haven for wonderful wildlife and a relaxing idyllic lifestyle for its occupants, but with dark secrets hidden beneath the surface. The story began with one of the main characters called Rosemary who is the link that connects all the pieces together of the crime, making her someone significant and memorable. The research into a rare breed goes horribly wrong and afterwards with a devastating murder case, comes hidden clues and an event that is shrouded in mystery. I felt like I was reading an old detective novel like Sherlock Holmes as the characters of Ryan (the police officer and discrete detective), Brandon the hasty officer and Mr. Preston the shrewd Island owner. This trio led by the central character of Ryan made this story come to life, as the plot thickens and startling discoveries shock and surprise you. I was left guessing throughout as to whom the killer was until the very end, with the amount of possible suspects making you wonder and question everything. It began in chapter four with the first suspect killer who totally surprised me and which sent chills down my spine, as you observe all the inhabitants on the most interesting Island. It seemed that intuition, some moral fiber and determination was needed to send the hero of the tale in the right direction as one clue then led to another before coming to a dead end. Just when you think that the case is solved then there is a bolt from the blue, as the thrilling fast-paced drama continues. The `teddy bears' were the main signs that seemed to show themselves at the opportune moment, but other than that I must say how I was left speculating until all was revealed. The suicide, the FBI and government intervention and the bird problem were all incredible parts that added to the depth of the storyline. I very much enjoyed getting to know more about various characters, some of whom I was able to connect with and relate to, as you also had to look beneath the surface to find out what the real person was underneath the façade. Constantly changing narrative voice you are able to see all angles and the viewpoints of each character.
The Private Island not only exceeded all expectations but I was blown away completely by the amount of skill and research that the author put into her book. I felt like I was a part of the case and that it was more than just a simple detective novel, as you really got to know the characters and be a part of their fascinating lives; hence why when another individual died did it feel so dramatic and important. I was intrigued by the idea of the reality television show that juxtaposed all the other killer suspects, by regarding the murder case (or any murder) in a somewhat satirical and sardonic way although being quite deadly underneath. I cannot tell you how thrilled I was when finally the killer was caught in a most dramatic climatic ending that was just fantastic (jumping up and down in my chair!). It was in some ways quite truth-drawing especially in the study of others, challenging and detailed, that makes you think about what does actually lye beneath the surface. To those readers who love crime and mystery then you will love this novel that I cannot compare to any other writer; some of my favorite books are by Camilla Lackberg and Sam Bourne but they are totally different. I cannot enthuse enough about such a spine chilling, dramatic and remarkable tale that will remain with me forever etched within my memory.
I would like to thank the author for providing me with a copy of her work to read and review, which I concider as a privilege and honor.
