Editorial Reviews

Review

“Anyone who has ever suffered through a dry academic symposium, with various ‘experts’ pontificating in prolix philosophical terms that would baffle Spinoza, will find much to hoot about in
“Safdie’s frenetic new plays of ideas…raises just about every issue that has kept design offices, coffeehouses and university hallways in conversation for he past century – then makes us laugh knowingly at ourselves for taking them so seriously.”
“Safdie has captured the character of architectural discourse—in all its subtleties and foibles—and brought to the public a disturbing (yet humorous) glimpse inside today’s architecture schools.” --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Format: Paperback
The driving force behind my purchase of this book was after I watched 2 live performances of Private Jokes Public Places in New York City. As an architect, I can relate to the struggles the main character was dealing with. The choice of words and double-meaning sentences by Oren Safdie made this book appealing and interesting to both the architecture world and the layman's world. It parallels in a metaphoric way, the life of an architecture grad student, with the struggles of a foreigner transplanted to a new country, a female in a male-dominated profession, a political underdog in a topdog's world, and all other situations of what real life is about. I recommend this for those in architecture because it will inspire. I recommend this for the architect because it will make you remember what it's like to be in studio crits again. Lastly, I recommend this for those who are not in architecture nor architects because it will help you gain perspective on the craziness of the profession, not to mention have a few laughs along the way.

If you've ever spent time listening to a large group of pretentious academics, this play will make you laugh for a while. It sounds exactly like most people graduate school. The ending of the play makes the whole thing worth it.
