A Window into Hollywood in the 20s and 30s, and two Complicated Hollywood Families -- the Mayers and Selznicks

Enthusiastically recommended by a friend who shares an interest in Hollywood history, I'm less enthusiastic, though I almost gave this book four stars. Most memorable is information re the author's ex-husband, David O. Selznick, who had a very good run in the late 1930s, fueled by benzedrine, gambling, womanizing and general inattention to his family. The story of two complicated Hollywood families, the Mayers of MGM-fame and the Selznicks, until Irene pulled out at the point at which Selznick's career was (retrospectively) heading down. Downsides: (1) the author generally eschews dating major events, so you either come away cloudy about the timing and sequence of major Hollywood and/or personal events, or you spend time cross-checking with Wikipedia; (2) some passages are obscure as to meaning; and (3) this may or may not be a very truthful account, but it is one person's vantage on reality. One interesting aspect is the considerable cross-fertilization of the major studios in the 1930s, and some other Hollywood "heroes", e.g., Irving Thalberg, come into view at least for their professional achievements.

The first half of her book was great, but when she got to the part where her husband, David O. Selznik, was filming GONE WITH THE WIND of which I was especially interested, it just fizzled out pretty much. I was hoping for more information from her viewpoint. She was lacking in much to say about GONE WITH THE WIND , and I got the feeling that she was jealous of his success with the movie. Very sad!

The GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD are the ones that get told through God's Creation, We, the people. I felt part of it all as Irene described various events. It is easily comfortable, and gives excellent insight into the times, as well as the history of the entertainment makers.

One of the best autobiographies I have read. If you have any interest in MGM(and her father, L.B. Mayer), early Hollywood, David Selznick (Gone With the Wind producer), Broadway and A Streetcar Named Desire, this book is for you. Irene had contact with a veritable who is who in Hollywood and Broadway. Irene comes of as a very likable and private woman. I would like to have known her.
