Nyko Pro Commander Review In Depth

OPENING, APPEARANCE, & TEXTURE

Honestly, at first this controller was not a dissapointment. It came in a beautiful box that was difficult to open, so I could not salvage the box since I had completely obliterated it trying to open it. The controller looks amazing and almost represents an Xbox 360/Xbox One controller button-wise. The buttons are in the same place as an Xbox controller, just the letters are in different spots. I especially liked the texture of the controller. It had a nice and sleek mat finish that felt very comfortable in your hand.

BUTTONS & FEEL

The buttons for the most part felt good at first, yet the L and R buttons felt very mushy and unnatural. Sometimes they would even get stuck. As an example, if you pushed it, it would stay down and not come up unless you manually pulled it up. The same would happen with other buttons such as the A,B,X,Y but those didn't give too much trouble. In my time of having it, it only occurred once. But that is still pretty bad considering I had this controller for less than a month. The most noticeable fault in this controller was the poor building of it. It looks like a quality controller but is not. I've had this controller for less than a month and do not play vigorously on it. I did not play Call of Duty or anything. And one day, I was going to play some Need for Speed Most Wanted U, and when I pressed down lightly on the analog sticks, they sank into the controller. It wasn't a huge problem but I was able to see the interior of the controller when it went down. I dealt with this and did not really care that this happened but I am returning this controller for a major reason. One day after playing some Bayonetta 2, I put my Nyko Pro Controller down on the stand for night, everything in good shape on the controller. When I woke up, it hadn't moved, but the bottom right analog stick was basically sticking to the left. When I moved it in a direction as soon as I let go it would go to the left. You had to hold it hard to keep it in place. When I went to play Hyrule Warriors, I tried turning the bottom right analog stick to analyze my environment and I could not play without it always looking to the left. This made games unplayable with the controller. I tried fixing this and couldn't. I contacted Nyko, and they told me they would send me an email as a reply. I received nothing.

GAMEPLAY

When this controller was working, it worked decently well, but the buttons glitching and sticking all the time just did not make a good impression on me. It was not ideal for gameplay and I just tried the official Nintendo Wii U Pro Controller and it was much better with none of the problems the Nyko Pro Commander had.

FINAL VERDICT

The Nyko Pro Commander tries to lure you in with it's beautiful looks, but it's looks are deceiving. This controller does not function well and I would not recommend it to anyone. If you have it, then I feel for you.

RECOMMENDATION

The official, 1st party Nintendo Wii U Pro Controller is a much more viable option as a controller. It may have a higher price than the Nyko Pro Commander but you get what you pay $50.00 for. I realize why the Nyko Pro Commander was $35.00 It was a good looking controller that tried to lure people, and dissapoint with it's many faults.

It's okay if you do not mind all these faults and sticking controls and buttons that make it very difficult to play, but when this does not occur, it offers okay gameplay. Nothing great. The Nintendo Wii U Pro Controller is much better and I recommend it. The main thing preventing me from giving the Nyko Pro Commander from giving it a 1/5 stars is it's outstanding looks.

I bought this controller because I thought that I needed an "Xbox 360ish" controller for my Wii U. However, I should have avoided this controller. This controller is WAY TO SENSATIVE and it completely depends on what game you are playing. I bought this controller for COD and for any other future shooters for the Wii U, but after spending about 6 hours with controller I just couldn't stand it anymore. The left and right sticks have no smoothness to them. They go from slowely moving about to full on sprinting in with no middle in between. No matter how I tweaked the setttings it just didn't matter, I couldn't get it to work. I find this controller completely unusable for me. I'm sorry, but I coudn't reccomend this controller to any of my fellow Wii U owners. I went and purchased a Wii U Pro Controller right after this and I fell in love with how perfect that controller is, please spend the extra cash for the supperior experience.

Ample Replacement For The Pro Controller, But Not Without It's Flaws.

This controller is a fairly ample replacement for the Pro controller in appropriate games. It feels pretty good in the hands, as it is fairly light and has a nice soft-touch finish that is almost rubbery on the outside of the controller. The triggers on this controller are actual rubber if I'm not mistaken, and feel alright, if a little stiff when pulling back. The only real issue I have with this controller is that the buttons (A, B, X, Y) feel stiff and difficult to tell when they are pressed correctly and I find myself pressing much harder on the buttons than I normally would to be sure that I am actually pressing the button. The finish on the outside of the buttons is also a little bit of an issue, as they feel "sticky" or something and I can't slide my fingers across the buttons smoothly, so you have to pull your fingers back from the buttons a little more and I feel that you have to be a little more deliberate with your button presses. But all in all, this is a decent replacement for the Pro controller, given that the layout is the same as the ever popular Xbox 360 controller.

Great controller, not so great company.

I recently had my house broken into, and my Wii U Gamepad was stolen. Note that I said that the gamepad was stolen, not the Wii U itself. Because... thieves are stupid? Whatever the case, I'd like to wait a few months before dropping $150 to get a replacement, and in the meantime, I decided a Nyko Pro Commander would suffice.

Here's the deal, SOME games work with just a pro controller, while others require the use of the gamepad. So while I can't use the e Shop, play Pikmin, or Super Mario 3D World, I CAN play Mario Kart 8, Wind Waker, and Mass Effect 3. Plus any e Shop games that are already on the console. So while the Pro Commander would only be a temporary solution, it works for the time being.

The Pro Commander is a perfectly capable controller. The buttons all feel great, including the bumpers and triggers, and it feels great in your hands. It's slightly smaller than a 360 controller, but not so much that it feels awkward. As a second controller, I think it's pretty darned close to perfect.

So why 3 stars instead of 5? Because you never know what you're going to get from a third party company like Nyko. When I received my Pro Commander, it wouldn't hold a charge. It worked if plugged into the Wii U, but not if I wanted to use it wirelessly. Thankfully, because it was an Amazon purchase, I was able to get a next day replacement, and not have to send the controller back until that replacement arrived. Had I purchased this anywhere else online, it would've been a much larger hassle.

Reading through other reviews, my problem isn't an isolated one. It's unacceptable that Nyko would send out faulty controllers. Still, my second controller works fine, and it's very well made. So there you go, it's a roll of the dice.

The pad is clearly designed after a classic 360 pad. You'd expect as a result for it to be about the same size as one, but it is not. It is quite considerably smaller, and as a result not nearly as comfortable. Hard edges and lines look trendy and fashionable but do nothing for its ergonomics. As a result I personally found the pad to be extremely uncomfortable to the point of causing severe cramping and physical pain within 30 minutes of use, though younger users or those with smaller hands might find it more comfortable. Button placement and triggers are good enough and the case's finish is otherwise pleasant to the touch but the lights to show what controller it's connecting as and whether the pad is on look tacky and cheap.

The one I purchased had a clearly faulty D-pad which would only respond at all if serious force was applied, meaning that the D-pad was entirely useless during gameplay. If that somehow ISN'T a fault with the d-pad and that is how the pad is deliberately designed, then please consider this review to be at least one star lower, because that is an abysmal design decision.

The button layout is attractive but honestly you're better off buying an official nintendo one. This pad is cheap, and it really shows.

Probably the best 3rd party controller you'll ever find for the Wii U. Very lightweight and has a nice feel to it, though a bit rough around the seams. It is by no means perfect, the d-pad is pretty bad and the L/R shoulder buttons don't feel like they're really there, though they seem to work just fine. The joysticks are concave (like the Xbox controller) rather than convex (Playstation/Wii U controllers). Some people prefer one over the other, so that's something to consider. The triggers seem to be analogue (pressure sensitive) rather than just simple buttons that the standard Wii U controller has, however I don't think the Wii U actually supports analogue triggers. I haven't really had much chance to test that yet though.

Do take note that the Wii U will see this as a Pro controller and as a result will only work with games that support the Pro controller.

This is a high quality product. I heard other reviews on forums that it would not work with Minecraft Wii U edition, but at least for me it works perfectly for all games. One thing I would say is that because I'm a small person, it is fine for my hands, but it might be a bit small for other people. totally get it, save yourself 5 quid and get a durable and comfy controller in return.

Have had an issue with it however while playing Batman Arkham origins, when I access the map screen the cursor won't stop moving around, meaning I have to switch to the games to fast travel. That aside a fantastic controller, easily the best on the Wii U.
