Pro–Ject RM–1.3 The RM–1.3 is designed to look and perform like no other affordable turntable. Featuring a Sumiko Pearl moving magnet cartridge that is factory mounted for your convenience, the RM–1.3 delivers musical fidelity that belies its price. A resonance–optimized MDF platter with a felt mat rests upon a three–point MDF plinth with an isolated motor assembly optimized for low noise and speed stability. The RM–1.3 incorporates an inverted chrome plated stainless steel axle that rests on a polished steel bearing in a bronze housing for low wow–and–flutter and speed accuracy. Three nylon cone feet further reduce noise and vibration. A single–piece fixed headshell 9" S–shaped tonearm features hardened stainless steel bearings and rigid aluminum tube to provide superb tracking. Accurate adjustment of both VTA and azimuth is easily accomplished. Detachable RCA interconnect cables included.

Initially, out of the box, it seems pretty daunting, I was overcome with a fear of breaking something but it is pretty solid, and the set-up is relatively easy (just google tips for this table). Ok, so the sound, here is the thing, I paired it with a Cambridge Audio - Azur 651P - MM/MC Phono Preamplifier – great product, and my amp is pretty decent but I know I need to upgrade my speakers – and you are going to want to do that, otherwise you just won’t get the most out of the table. For now though (and including some headphone comparisons with a digital lossless version of albums) I’m more than pleased, and know that I have even more to discover and enjoy from this table. I would recommend doing the following – either build or buy a decent home for it, research isolation, buy some decent cables, use the ground wire, buy some new 180gram vinyl as well as thrift store finds to get a real feel of the quality, and spend some time dialing in the sound for your space.
All in all I am excited to come home and put on a record, there is something magical in the ritual.
Prior to purchasing the RPM 1.3, I tested the Audio Techniques LP120, and the Debut Carbon. The AT-LP120 felt very plasticiky, it had the so called Stroboscopic platter speed indicator but adjustment was manual if there was any error in rotation speed the locking button would only set the speed to default. Further it had a pre-amp built in which was a serious no-no for me. I found it more gimicky and for DJing rather than music listening, the quality of music listening with its own built in pre-amp was below par.
Next I compared the music quality between Debut Carbon and RPM 1.3, both were 9 points out of 10 points for me. Both came with Ortofon 2M Red cartridge. The RPM 1.3 did not have a dust cover but it was more upgrade-able if required as it had VTA adjustment.
The sound quality is excellent,no motor hum (it sits on its own with its own power supply and on-off switch, it does not touch the main body) or any electro-magnetic interference at all, as there is no electronics built in. The signal from the cartridge goes straight to RCA phono output. I have paired it up with Cambridge Audio 651P and Yamaha RXV-675 with Warfedale speakers. It is a bliss now listening to my LP collection, I wonder why did I ever switch to CDs.
I have ordered a cork turntable mat, this is immediate upgrade for now, as I find the included felt mat very cheap.
