Clean Your Water Softener With Rust Out For Better Performance

Rust Out softener rust remover chemically removes iron and rust build-up that coats the resin beds and fouls the softener. This iron build-up is not totally removed during normal regeneration of a water softener. Using Rust Out softener rust remover in a water softener will eliminate rust and foreign matter from the resin bed which increases the life of the softener and reduces rust staining on household fixtures and other surfaces. We recommend using the softener rust remover regularly as preventative maintenance to ensure the softening and recharging efficiency of the softener's resin bed. Additionally, in applications where iron is present you can use our well water formula to fight annoying rust stains.


Water Softeners: Rust Out softener rust remover dissolves the iron in the mineral bed and is rinsed from the softener much the same as salt brine.	First Application: Dissolve 1 cup in 1/2 gallon cold water. Pour directly into brine well (softeners with no brine well, pour directly into salt tank when salt level is low). Manually regenerate softener. Repeat for heavily fouled unit.	Preventative Maintenance: Add 1/4 cup for every 40lbs. of salt added to brine tank. Layer to ensure a continuous dose with each regeneration.	General Purpose Cleaning: Our softener rust remover works on dishwashers, dishes, glassware, white clothes or fabrics, and water softeners - follow directions on the back of the package.

This product appears to have removed iron from my water system as the day after its use my water was rust colored. The problem encountered the next day, and is why I can't give high marks, is that for the following month after the initial treatment the water smelled of hydrogen sulfide. Extremely strong hydrogen sulfide. The only way I was able to remove the odor was through a high concentration chlorine water solution run through all of the lines of the house. Had I known the Rust Out would have caused the H2S odors I would never have used it.

NOT for WELL water on Cast-Iron tubs

So this project DOES remove rust stains very well from porcelain. It also removed some light stains from my enameled cast iron original bath tub from the 1930’s... HOWEVER... on the second use in the tub (trying to remove the stubborn stain around the drain) it left Gray/ Black stains that were very difficult to remove. I tried emailing the company for advice on how to remove the strange stains. But they never responded. After much research, I think it’s possible that the high iron content of my well water was the culprit. I believe the Iron-Out precipitated the iron out of solution and it settled on the enamel of the tub and adhered. I was able to find some acid based cleaner (a no-scrub product with oxy-clean) and it miraculously removed the gray stains.
I still have not heard from company!!

Make sure, if you are following the directions for first use, to use a VERY LARGE container for mixing 1.5 cups of the product with a half-gallon of cold water. The product reacts with water to produce a ton of bubbles which will overflow a small container and spill all over the place. Thanks for the warnings not to swallow the product or put it in your eyes, but you would think you would get a warning about following the directions on the back of the product.

We are on well water and have very hard water. We haven't had issues with our water and have used the iron fighter salt pellets. The store didn't have them one time so we used regular pellets. Our water in the brine tank smelled like trash and had foam on top. I used one dose of this and it seemed to work well. The brine tank water smelled strange from the powder mixture, and for a couple of days, the slight order could be smelled in the shower for example. The smell is now gone and the brine tank water doesn't have any smell like before.

Made our water smell like rotten eggs. I called the customer support line and was told that if I'm already using iron out salt pellets then do not add this product to my system. Was advised to regenerate softener again, wait a few hours, then regenerat one more time. Hopefully this gets rid of the smell...
EDIT: regenerated 4 times over 2 days, each time it would clear it for a little while. I'm going to completely empty my brine tank today and
start over. I wish they would have put a warning on the label.
Follow up: cleaned out brine tank, used bleach on system to no effect. Put a gallon of vinegar in system and still smells like rotten eggs. I'm told the medium in my softener is ruined. Would not recommend purchasing this.

Do Not Use With Rust Removing Salt

I contacted customer service about using Rust Out with rust removing salt and received the following response:
"If you are using a treated salt, we do not have any product that we recommend using, because there could be a chemical reaction to the additive in the salt.
If you got to a straight salt, our Rust Out product would be the recommendation if the iron content is 3 ppm or higher. If the iron content is less than 3 ppm, you could use our Res Care product to clean the resin bed in your softener. Again, only use with untreated salt."
I chose not to use Rust Out since I would prefer the taste of rust to hydrogen sulfide and I did not want to empty my salt tank to change over to untreated salt. I think that the product info should be more upfront about this.

Works like a champ in an area with terrible water

This year's water has been terrible due to alternating periods of heavy rain and dry weather. I inadvertently let my salt tank run dry and my water got terrible, smelled and tasted like blood. I got this powder yesterday, and ran 1-1/2 cups in a half gallon of water into my brine tank (refilled with salt properly) and performed a manual regeneration on my dual resin tank system. Today, the water is fantastic again and all traces of taste are gone. The hot water will take a day to cycle through the hot water tank, but cold tap water is sparkling clean and odor free again. Would absolutely recommend to anybody with an older resin bed system...this could really bring it back to life and I wish I had known about it before I had my system torn out and replaced two years ago.

If you use this product, use gloves and also a breathing N95 mask, like those you wear EVERY DAY just to buy some milk. If you tough or breathe this, the burning will definitely warm you up as your skin rots off. This product does work. Is a must for the well water in northern states. sprinkle it between salt pellet layers. My water without the softener tastes like licking an old railroad track. That means that iron is being cleaned out by the softener. This product cleans that rust off the softener beads.
