Not only does it work; but it is easy to set. You set the trap from the outside of the cage. It is also easy to set the mouse free :). Yaaaay! Doing the happy dance!
It is sturdy, well made, wonderful engineering of a product, no need to improve, absolutely fantastic humane mouse or critter trap!
I just dropped some sunflower seed through the top of the cage and did not even have to put my hand in there; the first one we caught, my husband did use some cheese with peanut butter; but the seed worked just as easy. The picture is of the first one we caught with the cheese. We have caught 4 in the past 2 days.
Look at the cuteness in the cage :). It is so much fun letting them go; this one kind of creeped out slowly and then turned back and looked at me and sat up on his back legs; and then scampered off; the others did a little jumping happy party running dance :). Fun!
I know they are suppose to be dirty and destructive; but I do not want to kill them. I tried some other ones; and did not have any luck and my husband put the kill ones out and caught one and I cried and cried. So I am sooooooo happy to have found this one; and he is too becuase he hated making me cry.
Hardware cloth that composes the cage is thin and spot welds are of poor quality.
Cage handle, which is also part of the trigger mechanism arrives bent at 90 degrees so it can be shipped in the box without taking up much space. This handle must be bent back to its upright position in order for the trap to function.
Trap is light and does not sit flat, construction is out of square. Will need to be weighted down if placing outside or if used for rats or similar sized rodents.
Lots of play in the trigger mechanism, but you can set it for a very light touch. This is exactly what I did and caught a very fast moving mouse.
I baited it with yogies and tomcat attractant (both sold on Amazon)...
I would have given it FIVE STARS if the workmanship quality was better, but I just can't overlook that aspect.
So, five stars for function, four stars for build and material quality.
It's a winner, just needs to be made of better material. A squirrel or full sized rat will definitely damage the trap, so frequent checking will be required just so you can get the animal out before if eventually gets out on its own, or dies of stress and dehydration.
Can't say much more than that. Pretty darn good!
Took a bit of figuring out to see how the trap works but it's not hard. Lift the door up and extend the trigger bar towards the bottom of the V shaped loop that is now lying on top. Hook them together lightly and you are all set to catch the critter.
The kill / snap traps hadn't enticed a rodent earlier but this trap caught a rat 4 days after I set it out with minimal baiting. I put a small pretzel chip with some peanut butter on the other side of the trigger.
The trap itself doesn't feel extremely sturdy, but you can't argue with success. We'll see what happens if a squirrel happens to also be up in the attic, I supect it either won't fit or it will be strong enough to tear the trap open. Will post updates as I can. Thanks!
