This is the best $50.00 purchase I have ever made!
I must admit I was nervous about purchasing headgear with a facemask, mainly because no one in my karate class wears a facemask. However, having gotten punched in the face one too many times, I decided I was going to purchase this.
People initially smiled when they saw I was wearing a facemask, but within the first 3 minutes of sparing, I had gotten punched in the face (with my facemask on). . . and you know what? It didn’t hurt!
I am very pleased with the facemask and have worn it when sparing ever since.
About the product:
(I am comparing this product to the Century headgear that I initially purchased when I first began sparring.)
I like it because the headgear protects my jaw; the padding comes down along the jawbone and around my chin. It protects all of my face.
This product feels very secure on my head. Although, after I spar for several minutes and begin sweating it begins to slide a little (just enough to feel loose, but not enough to come off or affect my sparing.) When I have to buy another headgear, I WILL purchase this again. However, I will try a size smaller.
The facemask does not impair my vision. I was a little nervous at first that it would affect my vision and therefore my balance/reflexes, but it does not. It has not impaired my senses at all and has improved my sparing because I am no longer afraid of getting punched in the face and am therefore more aggressive.
Note to people with long hair: I have extremely long hair and wear it in a relatively high ponytail. The headgear allows me to wear my hair up without pushing my ponytail out of place.Read more ›
And yeah, when I get punched in the head it doesn't hurt all that much. That's a nice touch.
- Seems to have a lot of padding. It looks like a softer version of a motorcycle helmet, and just as big too.
- Easy to put on and off. Which can be pro and a con.
- Very tight around the cheeks, and squeezing the ears.
- Could not move my mouth around (just to open to breath) b/c the chin was tight against it.
- Part of the helmet was loose, and other parts were tight. I even removed the face mask, which relieved some tension, but it was still awkward.
Overall, I would have liked it if it fit better and didn't have a tear. The extra padding that people are commenting on is definitely there. I would say this would fit better if you have a rounder face. Long face will have issue putting this on as chin will not go in properly and part will be loose and other part will be tight. The strap is on the back of the head.
The only caveat is all the extra padding make it a little big. it's noticeably larger than the Century headgear.
It will protect against hard hits better but, my kids only do light-contact sparring. It just makes his head a bigger target.
If you are doing heavier contact sparring, I would recommend this over the Century headgear.

So far we are liking this helmet. My son has dreads and a large head ;). This helmet is fitting comfortably on his head without messing with his hair too much. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Kim
Great headgear. It's lightweight, yet protects the noggin. With ANY headgear, you will still feel the impact of a hit. This will just help you avoid getting any bruises. Read morePublished 3 months ago by Brian H
