For some of us the only solution that works is the process of self-transformation.
There is a relatively small group of books written about the process of self-transformation. Within that group only a few give specific and concrete suggestions about how to engage in that process. This book, A Process, by Bruce Hanson is one of those very few.
Bruce, the books author, derives his suggestions from working with others – helping them through this process. As one who has benefited from Bruce’s help, I can attest to the usefulness of the methods recommended by this book.
The book distills what Bruce has learned from his experience. It is related to the 12 steps originally developed by AA and later adapted by other groups.
The book will be useful to several groups of people:
• Those who wish to use some of the concepts within the 12 step programs but decide that their place is not within such a program.
• People following a 12-step program who want specific suggestions about how to proceed.
It is of use to the individual seeker and also those who sponsor, mentor, or counsel others along this path.
This is not a slick book, or an easy read. It’s more like an instruction manual for a complicated instrument– that instrument being you, yourself.
If you give this book your attention you will find in it the voice of someone who has himself, found his way out of great difficulties, has helped others to follow the same path, and earnestly wants to share what he has learned with you.
This is not a book that simply gives a man a fish. It is a book that teaches a man how to fish. It does not just provide answers. It provided me questions that set me on an ongoing journey of personal reflection, responsibility and renewal after I finished the book. Through the stories and exercises I began to see strengths I had never seen --- and weaknesses I could never acknowledge. I learned I was both broken and powerful. I started to see my own contribution to my suffering.
Many authors can provide knowledge and information. Mr. Hanson’s book provides an opportunity and path to becoming a better and more capable person.
Changing our ways isn't easy and it doesn't happen by accident. Lasting, meaningful change takes deliberate action, patience, and continuous practice. If you're ready to leave your old ways behind then this book is exactly what you need to move in a new direction.
