The banana tastes like a banana, it was firm and fresh. It tasted like I expected a banana to taste, not like banana candy or banana extract, just banana. The photo is a banana after a week. If you don’t eat the banana, it turns brown. That’s what happens to bananas. They taste better in smoothies if you let them ripen like this. But, I’m not going to eat this soft, brown banana, I prefer firm bananas. I’m going to freeze this banana in chunks, maybe eat it frozen, maybe put it in banana bread, banana cake, banana pudding, or banana Rama. I recently learned that there’s no nutritional value in bananas. I still buy them, I like the taste. Until someone gives me a political reason to stop supporting banana republics, I’ll keep buying. I like Banana Republic, they make nice skirts.

What can I say about bananas from Amazon's Whole Foods that hasn't already been said?

My experience with Whole Foods goes back to 1985 when I used to walk down the street to the hippie-run 3,000 sq ft store at 10th and Lamar in downtown Austin. That was in the days when there was only one Whole Foods store on the planet. It was a small neighborhood health food store. That was back when you could see the Capitol building from anywhere within a 2-mile radius. These days, even on an engineer's salary, I can no longer afford to live walking distance from that Whole Foods; such is the price of housing in Austin in 2022. Nostalgia. Sigh.

The Whole Foods bananas I remember - in those golden days of my youth - were sweet. They were a daily food for me. They ranged in color and ripeness. I did not ask the opinion of others about them, let alone read reviews about bananas.

These days, I eat them less often. Have bananas changed? Is it my carb awareness? Have my tastes changed as I've grown older?

In those olden days, if you wanted to meet up with a friend, you might call them on a landline. You hoped they were home near the phone, or at least had an answering machine. In those days, when most social encounters were not planned, walking to Whole Foods held the possibility of social activity. It was not just a shopping trip. It was a venture into a world full of wonderful weirdos. Who knew what the Rastafarian clerk might say over the PA system - usually very funny politically incorrect stuff in those days. More than once I heard the WF employees using the PA system to have personal conversation across the store.

The goal of going to buy bananas wasn't about getting in and getting out as fast as possible. It would not be unusual in those days to end up in a calm and rational political conversation with a stranger while picking out your bananas.

In those olden days (in the Before Times), there were no labels on bananas saying organic. It was all considered organic (even though it probably had pesticides of some sort). Several years later I noticed that fruit flies did not come out of ripened non-organic bananas like they used to. I thought, "If a fly cannot survive on 'non-organic' bananas, then how can I?!" I switched to an organic-only policy. When I see a little rot on a banana I consider it a sign that it can support life.

Thank you for reading this far. I appreciate your attention span and dedication to finish what you start. If you buy a banana from Whole Foods, no matter what its condition, I encourage you to cherish the modern wonder it represents. Cherish it and the fact that you are alive in such a time of wonder. Don't focus on the brown spots. Focus on the parts of it that nurture your body and soul.

Slow down when you peel it. Fully bring yourself into the moment. Take time to smell the banana before you bite into it. Your senses are a reminder that you are alive. Close you eyes when you take that first bite. Let it coat your taste buds. Feel the texture, the sweetness. Imagine all the humans throughout history (the majority) who never had the opportunity experience what you are experiencing in that moment. Exclaim to yourself, "I am eating a banana! Whoa!"

Now, finish your grocery order and get off the computer. Stop reading reviews about produce. Each day is a gift. Go outside and exhale! Then breath in the fresh air. Focus on your blessings. It's all going to work out somehow.

I ordered a bunch of 5 which were delivered green. my guess is that the majority of people prefer green bananas rather than already ripe bananas, but either way is fine with me. they ripened over the next few days. I ate them even a little bit green and they tasted fully ripe. great with cereal.
