It is an irony that the book which is supposed to help the reader build the right products is itself poorly structured. The fifth paragraph of the foreword section says everything you need to know about this book. Product mindset covers three self-explanatory characteristics and core principles.
There are two authors for this book, each covering alternate chapters. We start with the first author introducing the product mindset pillars in his own words and then the second author rehashes it in her own words. Part I of the book is done.
In Part II, the authors deep dive into each of these pillars, but there is nothing new in there. Both the authors have used page fillers with sections fork lifted from books such as Crossing the Chasm (BTW, if you have not read Crossing the Chasm, you should. Classic IMO).
Worse, there is nothing new in these famed pillars. For example, the authors recommend building products for customer requirements ("product mindset") and not to make engineers happy ("IT mindset"). Duh!
I have returned the book for a refund.

Was really looking forward to this, especially after the huge impact "Digital to The Core" (Raskino & Waller) had on the way the industry approaches products today. Sadly, this book is packed with trite recommendations and tired stories of Google, Apple, Uber, Facebook, etc. which have business models that are unattainable/impractical for most existing companies. (Mention the digirati to most business leaders today and they'll roll their eyes and scoff.) Also, the repeated mindset theme of a digital product being "self-funding, chosen, and never done" isn't anything new, rather it's what successful businesses have done with any/every product or service for centuries. That said, the writing is easy flowing, and perhaps aspiring product managers just out of school might find this book mildly useful--but not business leaders.

Executives need to think differently about the digital economy and this is the book to help

I have read the Product Mindset book several times and it has changed the way I think about business. I find myself constantly returning to the book to refresh my understanding of its concepts so that I can apply them to something I’m working on. I find the insights to be unique and powerful. It is clear that the digital economy is evolving in new ways and in order to navigate this new world we need to think differently.

I've been building digital products for almost 20 years. And yet, The Product Mindset has made me feel like the 4th Ghostbuster - the new guy that tries to explain to the mayor of New York that he was once skeptical, but these guys really do know what they're talking about. This frame has put so much of what I've felt or believed come into focus.

Concise description with lots of practical case studies sprinkled throughout. Highly recommended for leaders and practitioners alike. This is a great read!

This book completely changed how I looked at the future of our technology and where our businesses are headed digitally. The digital transformation has been dizzying, and David DeWolf prompts us to take a step back and ask WHY our companies are developing the digital products they are developing. It seems like apps have become just "something you have to have" if you're any company today. But DeWolf says apps for apps sake aren't worth it - they won't make your company cooler or better just because you have one. Instead, apps and digital products have to have revenue potential and solve a real customer need. Think of how many apps you download... and then delete because you don't find any use for them. I loved this read.

After reading the book I can't really understand what would be the "new thing" that they are presenting. Basically what it says that the whole organization needs to listen to their customers and work in an agile manner to continuously adapt to change.
If you read the foreword then you have basically read the book. Or even more, as pointed out in another review, paragraph 5 of the foreword is probably enough.
Sometimes it's good to repeat the obvious though, so for that reason I give it 2 rather than 1 star.
