Editorial Reviews

Review

''Transforming education is one of the signature challenges of our times. Professional Capital sets out exactly and undeniably why the only way to do it is to honor and improve the profession of teaching. Written by two of the sharpest educational thinkers in the world, Professional Capital is an incisive critique of the failing reform movements in many countries and a powerful manifesto for the only strategy that can and does work. This book should revolutionize how policymakers and practitioners alike think and act in education. The price of failure is more than they or our children can afford.'' --Sir Ken Robinson, world-renowned author and educator

''A must-read! Brimming with insights and action ideas, Hargreaves and Fullan lay out a clear and cogent plan to transform American public education, community by community. Professional Capital is a finely written and urgent argument for real change in how we do our business.'' --Dan Domenech, executive director, American Association of School Administrators

''This important book makes it clear that teaching stands at a crossroads between policy decisions that will help create a great profession for all teachers or ones that will make teaching robotic and unexciting--hurting student learning for years to come. Hargreaves and Fullan urge us not to stand aside or to wait. It is time, they say, for the teaching profession to be led by, for, and with teachers and for others to join in concerted action to support that transformation.'' --Dennis Van Roekel, president, National Education Association

''The teaching profession is at a crossroads. Grounded in global knowledge and experience, Professional Capital provides brilliant insight into what the next generation of teaching should look like. This book is a must-read for anybody thinking of teaching in the twenty-first century.'' --Pasi Sahlberg, director general, CIMO at the Finnish Ministry of Education

''This is a really terrific book. It's balanced, thoughtful, yet also passionate. Remarkable in its reconciling divergent positions in sensible ways. Among the best things Hargreaves and Fullan have done--which is no small compliment, I assure you!'' --Ben Levin, professor and Canada Research Chair in Education Leadership and Policy, OISE / University of Toronto

''Anyone, anywhere who has anything to do with schools and the world of education will want to read, reflect, and react to the content of this book . . . A real treasure trove of riveting and informed insight into what really matters in teaching and learning. A powerful duo with a powerful challenge to the world of education. Professional Capital cries out for informed action--for the good of all children and their teachers.'' --Christopher Harrison, president, National Association of Head Teachers, England

''I love the focus on professional capital and decisional capital. Hargreaves and Fullan give us a deep, practical understanding of ways to improve our schools and our school systems. This is new, exciting thinking.'' --Steve Munby, chief executive, National College for School Leadership

''Hargreaves and Fullan have, once again, amassed the evidence to challenge our thinking and better our practice--from the teachers' lounge, to the union hall, to state and national policy tables. Their concept of 'professional capital' can help redefine and refocus efforts at all levels to build and maximize teaching capacity and improve results for students.'' --Randi Weingarten, president, American Federation of Teachers

Professional Capital is just what teaching needs at this time--a solid look at practices and ideas that really will increase student learning. With near unanimous agreement in the failure of No Child Left Behind, the time is ripe for ideas that will truly improve education. Unfortunately, much of what passes for education reform doesn't meet the standard set by Hargreaves and Fullan in this excellent book. I highly recommend this book as a template for change in our schools.

"Professional Capital" is A Must Read book on school reforms, change of teaching and learning cultures and classroom implementation of educational policies as wished by politicians, school leaders, teachers, students and parents. It is surprisingly sharp in its critique of politicians' search for quick measurable results, and it is equally solidly founded in presenting evidence and suggestions for a sustainable development of school cultures that will guarantee continuos improvement of institutionalised learning - the idea is the professional capital of collaborative teaching and learning.

One of the truly great books on faculty professional development out there. Data-based, but as the authors themselves say, not data-driven.

If you're following PISA, paying attention to the Finland-gap in education (i.e., between them and the rest of us), this is a great how-to and well worth the read all the way through. While primarily targeted towards public schools, is entirely applicable to private schools, parochial, Waldorf, etc.

A breathe of fresh air, for sure. Hargreaves and Fullan offer a clear, well researched, and solution-focused approach to growing schools. Responding to the current mania of business model pseudo-solutions to education's "ills," they place change firmly back in the hands of educators in an uplifting, though not light on challenging, way. A must read. Then give your copy away for someone else to read pronto.

This book provides well researched information about what works and what doesn't when it comes to transforming the quality of schools. The recommendations in the book are suitable for whole school reform as well as whole system reform. As an educational leader I found the book to be an excellent resource.

When I claim that I am the world's greatest detective of education, I am half joking. But the other half wants to know every good piece of education theory, research, or story that was ever produced. When I hear a book has earned the "prestigious Grawemeyer Award in Education" -- only one of which is given per year -- that book must be pretty special, and so it goes to the top of my read-and-review list. I'm going to detect the hell out of it, no criticism barred.

Professional Capital: Transforming Teaching in Every School, by Hargreaves and Fullan, won this coveted award in 2015. The Amazon reviews were also quite favorable (except for one of them.) Despite the use of "capital" in the title -- a term from the business world -- the subtitle looked promising. Transforming teaching in every school! I developed very high expectations for the book. I ordered it, hoping to gain some new insight on teaching or the profession as a whole.

In the preface, we get some bold promises. This book is about transforming the entire system: every teacher, every leader, every school. There are many paths we could take, and we have to choose the right one. This book is that correct path. It is about harnessing our potential: the power of "professional capital." This perspective, if we adopt it, will do nothing short of saving the entire education profession because it lays out a "new" kind of professional development, and a fresh approach to education system growth. Through professional capital, we will surely prosper.

This is an absolutely fantastic book! They articulate the long term nature of professional capital. It's also clear they have respect for, and understanding of teaching as a craft, an art and a skill.

Based on social, human, and decision all capital, professional capital is a concept that must be considered by educators as we move forward in this new era of increased accountability a great read overall.
