Ultimately, you will be interested in buying Wrox's Site Server Personalization and Membership to get a more thorough understanding of this critical component. This is a good example of how in depth the material converage should be for each of SS's components.
Last word: This is a great book for now, but ultimately it will leave you in a pinch for more detailed information as you traverse your installation and configuration. Additionall, it lacks coverage in the design of truly scalable enterprise e-commerce architecture using SS, and the interoperability of third-party modular components, say, for instance, if you want to integrate an accounting system, or a different order fulfillment software, or transcation processing outside of MS Wallet (e.g. Transact).
It would be a huge boon to the people using this if publishers would get on the trail of the hottest technology since NT, and publish some in depth Site Server books based on the modularity of its design. Hoping to encompass all of the feature sets in a 1000 page book will leave you feeling like a kid in a candy store with only a nickle in his pocket. -ch
I really studied something from this book which covers some very important topics such as Commerce Server Objects, Pipeline, and Wallet/Pay Now. However, this author did not want to explain them deeply. A lot of things could be gotten from SSCE document. The first six chapters are nothing. Not only waste your time but also challenge your patient.
Don't expect this book is a bible for SSEC. It is just "second" reference.
Before reading this book, I finished other two books (Pro ASP 2/Pro Site Server 3) from wrox, they are excellent. After that, I read this book, I am really disappointed, because this book did not explain SSCE in details and at the advanced level.
Honestly, only because this book is from wrox and the author did good jobs in others, I gave this book "3 stars". If not, I gave it 2 stars.
The book provides an excellent tutorial, starting from scratch and moving on to advanced issues like personalisation & cross-selling, in a very understandable way. Just a basic knowledge of ASP and IIS issues is required to go through the book easily.
Finally, i found issues covered on the book that we'd never even though of, like cross-selling, buy-now features, security & performance considerations and workarounds etc.
An excellent book !
This book really provided detailed materials for SS/SSCE. But it is a littile difficult for the beginners. If you are new one to study SS/SSEC, I recommend you to buy "Site Server Bible..." (I forget that name.) which could give you a good big picture of SS/SSCE in very short time. But this book, you must have sufficient time and interests on SS/SSCE to read it because it is a really heavy and thick book.
Anyway, in the current marketing, this book is the best for SS/SSCE (that's why I give it 4 stars but not 3 stars.)

Compared to the Wrox Site Server P&M book by Robert Howard which gives you stuff you can't get from the documentation then is a no no.
Probably worth it if you don't have the documentation and are trying to get into site server or if you need to read away from the computer.
