This Thing Surprised Me

I have a built-in 3½" card reader that I installed when I built my i7 rig, and it gets about 15-16mb/sec transfer rate from my SanDisk 32GB Extreme Pro CF card when I copied RAW files onto an internal drive (not my C drive, a separate one). The built-in reader started acting weird so I ordered one of these as a quick replacement. Wow. I get 27mb/sec sustained transfer speeds with this thing. My CF cards are UDMA and this reader is also, so that must be the reason. It's worked flawlessly for 3 months now. I just revisited the item to possibly pick up another one, and Amazon says Unavailable. Rats. Hope they get more in. The nearly double speed transfer is huge when you're transferring 4gb video files from camera to PC. If they come back in stock, ORDER ONE! You won't regret it, especially if you are using UDMA-enabled cards. BTW, I run Win7 64-bit Ultimate, with no compatibility issues. Make sure you plug it into a USB port on your motherboard (meaning back of your PC), don't use a jack on your monitor that's got a USB cable going pack to the computer. Often makes a difference.

This works very well. It is about one-half the size of a man's wallet. It comes with a short USB cord. Please note: when I plugged this unit into the front of my desktop PC, I could not get it to work. The computer would not recognize it. But when I plugged it into the BACK of my computer, it worked fine. I tested my front USB port with a different device. The port works fine. So if your computer has trouble recognizing this device, try plugging it into a different port on your computer.

Wow! Great product at a fair price

This reader is quite fast and works like a charm in combination with UDMA CF cards (16GB and 32 GB) used in my my Canon EOS 7D and my PC. My PC (Windows 7 64-bit) recognized the device instantly when I connected it (USB 2.0 - no external power) and I have had no problems at all reading or writing (for camera firmware upgrade). The packaging was a little cheesy, but I didn't buy it for the packaging. The reader does its job and does it well for a fraction of the price of comparable (?) devices. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with this reader.

Good Reader for Photography.

I purchased this device to get Adobe Lightroom to read my cards quicker so I could preview w/o out waiting for load times on my older PC.
I am using a Gateway GM5474 desktop computer. AMD Athlon(tm)64 X2 6000+, 64-bit dual core processor, 4 Gigs of RAM. I am also using this in conjunction with Uspeed Superspeed USB 3.0 PCI-E Card with 4 USB 3.0 Ports (with 4-pin Power Connector) . This is what I got for speeds reading a SanDisk SDSDXP1-008G-A75 8GB Extreme Pro SDHC Memory Card

For the Data I just used 7 GB of video for the testing

With USB 3.0 card and reader:
PC to Card =30.85 MB/s
Card to PC =41.25 MB/s

Regular USB 2.0 with reader got:
17mb/s
19.5 mb/s

My old built in reader got:
11.5 mb/s
17mb/s

So as you can see a noticeable difference but no where near the hypothetical speed of USB 3.0. However the bottleneck in this case is the 45 MB/s memory card.

The reader performed better that my systems built in reader plugged into the USB 2.0 port so I have no complaints.

Pros: Very small, has an indicator light when memory is inserted correctly.

Cons: None that I can think of.

This stopped working after a couple of months. DO not buy this product. If you are a professional photographer, I urge you to buy something else. It will read your card, but not import into Lightroom or Photoshop after a couple months. I went through so much hassle figuring out what the problem was and figured out it was the card reader.

NOT worth the money or hassle.

Nice for the price

The unit came quickly and works great! I have tried a few other units all more expensive, some a lot more expensive and this one holds its own. I plugged it in and in a matter of 5 seconds it was ready to go. I've tried it with SD and CF cards and both work great. A 2GB CF card full of large HD pics downloaded in 15 seconds. My 32GB SD card with 29GB used with large HD pics and videos downloaded in 1min. 28sec. I'm not sure what the issue is as I almost didn't buy this based on speed issues brought up by other reviews but that's pretty fast. I do have it connected to a USB 3.0 so that might be the difference.

I would have given this a 5 star rating but it seems pretty "delicate" and you really have to pay attention when inserting the CF card. It goes right in without any problem or effort if you line it up right, but don't force it or you'll bend the pins and ruin the slot. So in other words DON'T FORCE IT! If you feel resistance at all pull it out and try it again. After the second use I haven't had any issue and I reason you won't either.

All in all good buy!

Almost Perfect

Granted, I just received this card reader yesterday but it fits the bill perfectly. I wanted a unit I was sure could read High Capacity cards and was able to read Compact Flash and SD cards. That's all I needed and, from what I gather, that's about all most folks need. It does both of those things just fine. If you need a unit that reads memory sticks, or you want a 19-in-1 reader for some strange reason, or you simply must spend more money on something, well, keep on searching. As long as this holds up (and I've no reason to believe it won't) it will be there when I need it and it works pretty quickly - or at least a helluva lot more quickly than trying to load images to my computer from the camera! As far as the length of the cord, it could well be too short for some setups so be sure to check the length against where you'll have to sit this unit. Very pleased with this purchase.
