This entrepreneurial journey of Peter Profit is accompanied by crucial insights:
* Organize around the client, who incidentally is King! Just as everyone in the organization has a clear line of sight to into their personal share of the bottom line, they also clearly view their personal share of client goals and objectives. And it's not just as an abstraction but as the people (clients) who risk their careers and reputations working with Owen.
* Create systems where people routinely see the effect of their contributions on sales, on profit, on clients. This is not only the ultimate in transparency, but importantly a method for everyone in the company to be responsible and accountable. It also fosters a culture that demands performance because it is clear to everyone the effect of that performance.
* Have some fun. You can't read this book without seeing how much fun Owen has with Peter Profit. The entrepreneurial journey, like reading the book bursts with the joy of accomplishment and reward, all fueled by the magic of profits.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, Profit Magic does a good, and in many respects profound job of making operational those practices and methods that define effective execution.
The story never wavers from its core - that profit is what really matters. However, it repeatedly demonstrates that growing profits in business can be a shared endeavor filled with good people and good feelings. Not that it is all rays of sunshine; the message gains value as doubts, missteps, and misfortune color the journey and yield sharp, sensible advice on leadership and success.
Amid the churn of forgettable business books you "must read", here is a great little book you *should* read.
This is an amazing book and a must read for anybody who's ever wondered how to start and successfully keep a successful business afloat. Through info-tainment, Mr. Brooks takes us on a journey from the small start up to the large and sucessful firm. From this book, I have learned how to be a more effective and successful manager in my own career. I've learned that successful management involves recognition of the people working day in and day out to make the business successful, and I've learned that determination and levity will lead to absolute success. This is one of the few books I've read twice in a row, and I suggest that anyone who dreams of starting a business and anyone who just works for a living read this book. In a day where so many books of this nature are dry and textbook-like, it was refreshing to read something that inspired me, made me laugh, and made me wish I knew the author from day 1 of his amazing journey. Thank you Mr. Brooks for sharing your remarkable story and for giving hope to those aspiring to make a difference in their respective fields.
