By Mike Reed VINE VOICE on February 11, 2007
Format: Audio CD
Originally put out in 1971, looks to be this somewhat obscure krautrock band's third album. As big of krautrock fan that I've been for at least ten years now, 'Profitgeier' is clearly an acquired taste, as it was hard for me to fully appreciate this title for what it is. Some have stated they're quite similar to the Mothers Of Invention. They've also been tagged as a very political band. Only two tracks here that made sort of an impression on me were the seven minute epic "Wir Brauchen Keine Millionare" and the title cut "Profitgeier". Check it out for yourself WHEN you're in the mood for something diiferent.

This CD certainly compliments the ideas developed on Floh de Cologne's GEIERSYMPHONIE album. On that album, the band mixed a eulogy for a dead ex-nazi industrialist, with hippie-radical left wing propaganda , totally sung/spoken in German, with driving rock. On Profitgeier (Profit Vulture), you have a LIVE PREFORMANCE, of a ROCK OPERA. Again, over half of the album is spoken over music, or drones. (There isnt much singing.) Also, the lyrics are ALL in german. This might not be very entertaining, unless you have some good knowledge of German, including idioms, slang, etc. The CD includes a thick booklet, with all the lyrics in German, along with supplimentary prose that explains the story, and helps connect the spoken/sung parts on the album. Unlike most german language albums, there is absolutely NO translation with the booklet. As far as the opera's story line, its about Gilli and Uwe, young radical hippies in 1971 West Germany society, entering into the workforce for the first time. Both are treated like animals, and expected to destroy their dreams. (Read: Pink Floyd's WELCOME TO THE MACHINE.) Sociologically, it's your typically German hippie culture philosophy. At least of those on the far left, and dissatisfied by life. The Opera is really a rallying cry against boring repetitive work, life in overcrowded, very small apartments, with little hope for improvement in the future. The instrumentation is DRUMS, BASS/Guitar, ORGAN/Guitar, and two members that sing, and play percussion. Musically, the opera has a simple structure, but well played. I'm reminded more than anything of THE FUGS, during their "IT CRAWLED INTO MY HAND, HONEST" late 60s period. I suppose you could make a case for their sound refering to American psychedelic-garage bands, from 1966-1969.Read more ›

This is a perfect snapshot of Floh De Cologne's brand of krautrock. I probably won't need another album of theirs after getting this. The vinyl sounds great as well.
