Product Description
Product Description
The Profoto D1 Air 500 w/s Monolight is a significant refinement of the ComPact monolight series from the company which having become synonymous with professional strobe lighting, is now celebrating its 40th anniversary. This D1 Air 500 w/s 2-Light Studio Kit includes 2 D1 Air 500 monolights, 2-D1 Small White Umbrellas, 2-D1 Light Stands, 1-D1 Studio Kit Case and a Profoto Air Remote. No stone has been left unturned in the provision of tech and convenience features that seem to derive from professional photographers feet wish lists. The sleek matte-black, high-impact polycarbonate finish encases strobe design that goes beyond the highly visible LED readout and is digital from the ground up. The 7 stop power range breaks down to 1/10 stop increments providing flexibility, precision and consistency, made possible by dual mode SMPS capacitor charging. A new built-in 77 degree reflector (5.12" diameter) maximizes case space and is ideal for umbrella and softbox use. Features that we feetve come to expect from Profoto over the years: short flash duration, rapid recycling, a bright 300W modeling lamp and heavy-duty cabling are all on-board. New Profoto Air System technology replaces the sync cord, allowing the head to be remotely triggered from as much as 300 meters (1000 feet) away using a Profoto Air Remote (included with kit) or Air Sync transceiver (sold separately). The Air Sync provides wireless triggering (8 channels) via hot shoe or mini plug, while the Air Remote provides wireless triggering as well as full-function head control over 8 channels in 6 distinct groups. Additionally, the D1 Air feets syncing and complete functionality can be wirelessly controlled via your PC or Mac by using Profoto feets Air USB and Studio Air systems. Modeling lamp operation is user-selectable: On/Off/Proportional and Free (manual).

Another thing I've noticed, unlike traditional strobes, the Profotos have their bulbs flushed. Their reasoning is the angle of projection is optimal at this configuration, but I found with larger softboxes that it actually created hot spots compared to other strobes with the bulb styling. It's not too apparent, but can be seen as a pro in that if there was the rare occasion the unit was to be dropped or knocked, it is less likely to break anything.
Overall, an excellent product for serious hobbyists or professionals alike. If you're starting up and don't want to take the plunge with the price point, I would suggest looking at other brands like alien bees, white lightning etc. Just bear in mind with Profoto you are going to pay a premium but you do get good quality equipment. Also, any accessories will have that premium price tag attached. In closing the 4/5 rating lost a star due to the price point and quality of the stands and umbrella not being a shoot through.

I sent the heads in for repair, thinking perhaps I had received a bad set and was told by repair that much color variance, 600 K, is within specs. I was told that with the B1 strobes are more consistent in normal mode, and the allowable fluctuation is 150 K from full to low power. So I suppose the D1s are nice strobes but be sure to bring your color meter and gels if color accuracy is much of a concern. I haven't had them long enough to know how they will hold up.
I bought them as a gift for my fiance (a professional photographer) in January 2012. Immediately had to return them because one of the heads was broken. The return was relatively simple, but it was still disappointing and frustrating to buy a nice product and have it immediately broken out of the box. Now 7 months later on the replaced set, ANOTHER HEAD IS BROKEN! And this is with very minimal use during that entire period (most shoots were outdoors away from a power source, and we don't have a portable battery just yet). Worse, we found out it was broken when we went to shoot a wedding party last night.
For the price, I expected so much more - such as a product that doesn't fail - TWICE, even. Very Disappointed! And we can't return it through Amazon anymore. We have to go through Profoto's warranty process. Honestly, I just want to send them back and get a full refund.
Spend the money... worth every penny!
